Zelda will win just because it has Zelda in the title. Mario is the only competition out of that group, solely because it has Mario in the title.

Hour for hour, I had the best time with Horizon out of those (though haven't played P5 or PUBG) so I guess I'd go for that.

Nier: Automata would have been my first choice if it were there, though.

BOTW or Mario is going to win (fans only count for 10% of the vote). The only exception is if BOTW and Mario split too many votes and the voting system is not weighted then PUBG will probably win. Would be pleasantly surprised if Persona 5 won but that is probably the least likely to win besides maybe Horizon.

If you are picking a Top 5, Persona 5 gets that 5th spot for the "niche audience" over Automata.

Granted, PubG shouldn't be up there. I'd support Automata in there instead of PubG.

Different strokes. I'd put Horizon above Nier, Mario + Rabbids, Sonic Mania and Splatoon 2. I did like Prey better however. Haven't played the rest of your list though.

My problem with horizon is it went with the typical open world that wasn't needed, just long trekking for nothing. Once the story was over I really felt no reason to continue playing. Unlike games like the witcher where I want to do side quests

I thought Horizon's pacing was pretty good for an open world game. Nothing I did really felt like padding and nothing outstayed its welcome for me. I was jumping between quests that all felt pretty unique and the main story built up in a really cool way.

The combat was so fun and it was a great feeling dominating robots that used to be intimidating.

Same here. I really enjoyed it but I don't quite agree with people calling it GotY.
For me, it's the opposite; the story was just okay. I've seen the "To Be Human" premise pulled off much better in other stuff. But I found the gameplay to be a lot of fun despite the weak RPG element and chip system which felt non existent and kind of unnecessary after a certain point.

For me Prey is the game that has truly been robbed here. That game does so much great stuff and has insane attention to detail.

Unfortunately you can play that game wrong and have a bad time because of it. So I guess it'll always be overlooked.

It really doesn't bother me that much that PUBG is there. It's going to be the most influential game released this year.

I don't personally agree with it because the game it's still early access and janky. But I understand why it got nominated.

Zelda's probably the best all-around game on that list. The fact that it felt completely inferior to Witcher 3 isn't really something you can hold against it in this context.

I think it depends most on how you personally value a game. So while Nier didn't hit the heights gameplay-wise that other titles in similar genres have reached, the story picks up the slack. In contrast had the gameplay of BotW or Mario been mediocre, they would have nothing else going for them.

Admittedly by my own formula, Horizon should probably take it for having both great gameplay and story but Nier not only moved me -- it genuinely surprised me and I can't even remember the last time a game truly did that. That god damn soundtrack, too.

That's the complicated thing about GOTY awards.

For some it has to be a complete package of everything (story, visuals, gameplay etc.).
For some it is solely about gameplay
For some it is about the lasting impact it has on the industry
For some it is about the game excelling in everything it attempts to do

Personally for me it's a mix of the bottom two. Which Nier Automata doesn't quite strike.

But everyone looks for something different and that's great.
