In an email to me thanking me for doing some minor help with a project.

I dont know, it just feels weird that a 50-year-old Japanese financial director would send that in a corporate (albeit not public) email since anyone I know would be reprimanded for doing that.

Yea that's definitely one of those things that higher-ups can get away with. I would appreciate that though, gives a bit of personality.
