VIII and IX were both punching above their weight class with what they're trying to do and it shows even on the PC versions. FFVII ages the best for me pretty easily.

Oh god I wanted to find the scene again (Cloud wheelchair) and I regret it now. I can't believe I forgot that awful squeaky/screech noise it looped like every 2 seconds. That was a bad decision since there's enough dialogue to read there that you'll likely hear that sound for a few minutes straight

IX>>>>VIII>VII in terms of visuals. (IX>>VIII>VII in terms of total score) Like its not even remotely clse.

IX's best quality is its striking and awesome visual style, almost like an apology for being so dark and drab for two games.

The only good thing about VII is its so peppered with mini games and things that have nothing to do with the bad leveling system and laughably bad 'philosophical' plot.

and since everyone else is doing it my main beef with each FF game

FF I - wish you had just a little bit more customization within each class.

FF II - in the end, its actually a pretty short game and would have really benefitted from being able to develop the temporary party members more (though it is remarkable how well they DID develop Gordon and Josef). I don't find that I needed to grind by bopping myself in the head or anything. The game has a really great difficulty curve that doing too much of that negates.

FF III - The crushing difficulty - but that's also its best quality so meh.

FF IV - It's really quite long and narratively repetitive - you really could have cut the entire moon sequence and lost very little. Also bad sequels.

FF V - It too has a really repetitive narrative. It also kills off the best party member way too early in the story.

FF VI - World of Ruin, tons of superfluous characters leading to the ones WHO did have promise to have really dissatisfying narrtives. Plus that ending is just atrocious.

FF VII - This game just isn't fun. Every other game in the series has, at least at some point, some sense of real whimsy. The closest you get in FFVII is the crossdressing sequence but that really feels more like 'bad 90s anime' than I typically can excuse. The social commentary and translation choices have also aged pretty poorly. Plus that ending is just atrocious. Plus every character is basically the same aside from Limit Breaks and who gives a shit really.

FF VIII - Its biggest flaw, the infuriating inconsistency of the Draw system, is one I almost immediately patched away (thanks PC version). Still has major problems with characters feeling pretty much interchangeable, Zell and Laguna and to a small measure Quistis save this one from being so damn drab. The narrative is bananas without fun enough gameplay to counter it.

FFIX - SO. SLOW. And also the superfluous under developed characters hurt it. They should have picked one of Amarant or Freya and actually done them justice instead of having two halves of characters. Eiko probably didnt need to be a party member and neither did Quina. Its leveling ideas were crude versions of things they perfected later in FFXII, FFTA and TA2

FF X - no real glaring flaws other than Vchar being a fan. It does suffer some Seinfeld syndrome where it so successfully set the standard for JRPG battle systems that many other, better versions of it exist elsewhere.

FF XII - Narrative is pretty sloppily and inefficiently presented and the story ends up feeling really incomplete. Could have used more Basch and Ashe and less of the sky pirates, though Balthier definitely makes up for it.

FF XIII - the first 2/3s of the game are a really long tutorial and the plot is basically nonsense.
FF XV - Havent touched it.

FFT - they aborted their really cool political plot during the climax which is why I will never vote Delita, he wins for the stupidest of all possible reasons. Like FFX, it became the standard and was wholly surpassed.

FFTA - Judges

FFTA2 - not having any good characters aside from Adelle and Montblanc.

The world tour they take on after just feels so shallow and pointless.

I think its probably the expectations built up through the course of the game honestly.

Like, it took me a really long time t actually get through the back half of the game and like - it'll all be worth it because after how good the front half is this ending must be incredible ..

I think that's about it. It's better than all the rest as far as I remember. As said that speaks mostly to FF's ending quality in general but it stuck with me more than most of them. Just not a great series for endings really.

Well Trails FC ends on a cliffhanger - Trails SC has a really good ending where all of the major narrative threads get some level of denouement (not to mention countless minor ones).

That Estelle is far better than Terra is a given though.

I recall that there originally was supposed to be a lot more to Freya's story but most of it was scrapped. Big shame if true.

Yeah me at this point I'd rather have lego than a hideous attempt at graphics we've now seen done well time and time again. The cutscenes and backgrounds in FFVIII and FFIX still look good but the actual characters are like ugh.

Like at the time I probably, didn't mind as much since I hadn't seen better, but making em HD doesn't actually fix the core issue. They still look kinda bad to me.

Aesthetically I gotta go with Midgar and Mako reactors generally

The backgrounds/environments are actually pretty decent if you don't have characters on there to muck them up

FFIX has the best graphics because they match the art style of the game, so it doesn't matter that the character models look a little silly (and even still they looks less silly than 7)

The first Ultra fight of the series. And clearly I believe it fucking held up....

Remember the first time you fought this fight?
You had just beaten Hollow Bastion. You equipped Oblivion cause it was stronger (it was 2002 after all). Chip and Dale told you there were new tournaments at Olympus Coliseum. So you warped over there and talked to Phil. And he offered all the old tournaments, and the Hades Cup, and below that 5 "?"s. And you clicked on it cause dude, nothing can beat me....

And the fight starts and you walk into the arena and this huge beam fires down in front of you in its wake is a person.....

"HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT'S SEPHIROTH. I GET TO FIGHT SEPHIROTH. He just reached his arm out and extended his wing and a song starts OH MY GOD THAT'S ONE WINGED FUCKING ANGEL!!!!!
HE HAS MASAMUNE!!!! Let's god damn do this! It's called Platinum match. That's cool.

Huh... I died already.

And there we go. I would fight him 5 or 6 more times never surviving more than a second or two while trying to hit him. Then I decided I just wanted to dodge him. A couple more fights then I did. Finally, my goal was just to damage him. So I get it to where I am able to successfully dodge a couple. Make a charge at him and I am hitting this fucker.
He'll kill me immediately after by you are getting hurt bitch. And then I hit him.....

AND THEN IT DID NO DAMAGE!!!! (I mean, it did, but I didn't know how health on KH English worked back then) At that time I knew this battle was well above me right now, and I went to fight the Hades Cup instead.

But of course eventually I had finished everything else. 99 Dalmations, Hades Cup beaten, Hades cup timer and solo beaten, the other tournaments soloed and time beaten, Kurt Ziza, Phantom, Ice Titan, all had fallen to my blade. All trinities. Pretty much every treasure chest in the game. Game beaten, and since I never used any, more than enough Elixers for one battle.

Only 2 things remained. The Ultima Weapon and Sephiroth. I don't like farming stuff, and it's not like Ultima Weapon would help much (HAH) so we're gonna beat Seph first then go get the final items for Ultima Weapon and we'll be done with the game.

And we're off.

Second Chance and Leaf Bracer helped immensely, and it took quite a while but I finally did beat him. I got to the point that I just said I'm not gonna try to stop his Heartless Angel attack, just use Elixer and go from there. And of course his spinning Meteor when I finally got to that phase killed me a few times too. But eventually I broke through, and beat him, and that was it for Kingdom Hearts (HAH).

And that's it for the easy part. Easy you say, but all I've done is say how hard all these are. Yup. And none of them come CLOSE to what remains.

Guess which is #2 and 1. I may post them today, I may post them next week (lol). It's gonna be all at once though so not to spoil it, so it'll probably be like 4 posts.....

No way...

KHII Sephiroth is fought on a greatly superior battle system, meaning it's very easy to stop his Heartless Angel. Meteor is a lot easier to dodge, he has absoltely immense tells on every attack, his second most devastating attack is literally stopped by triangle and Reflect destroys him.

Yeah I dunno. Maybe I just wasn't as good at KH2 as I was at KH1 but I definitely took more tries to beat KH2 Seph-- and this was being more experienced with the game at that so you can't even make that argument.
