So I apply and it goes through okay. But then I get a response from them saying I have to pass a "Savings and Resources Test" and had to send them a FUCK load of paperwork. So I do, and I get a call from them, saying my benefits were denied. What a load of fucking horse shit. "What if I have savings? Most households applying for SNAP no longer have to pass a savings/resource test in order to get SNAP benefits. This means that the household's assets (stocks, savings and retirement accounts, etc.) are not considered when determining eligibility." - ny.gov Can someone explain to me how I was singled out of EVERYONE? The primary eligibility determination for food stamps is this, again from NY's gov site: If your gross income, based on family size, is at or below the amounts in the following charts, you may be eligible for SNAP benefits. But, the only way to determine if your household is eligible for SNAP benefits is to apply So obviously if I'm unemployed, I have no current income. Your checking account, and certain other types of accounts aren't considered as savings. And finally, if you still receive anything from your former job (severance pay, back pay passive income from things like shares, etc) it still counts as gross pay. NY's site says "if your income is below this, based on your household, you may be eligible". So my household is me - 1 -. My income is 0. 0 is less than their cap for a household of 1 person. Therefore I am eligible.
