At a certain critical mass in society these accusations will start to become basically the same thing and we have to start taking the apologies and guilt admissions with some salt. And I suspect it already has for some. For instance I don't take it as proof in the case of Charlie Rose for reasons already given. Keep in mind you shouldn't assume illegitimacy either, but if we progress beyond the need to gather facts it starts to go further and further into plea bargain territory. That's my fear. Basically it's important that we start at 0 with these accusations and go from there. He's not really a great example here, but was the most clear example of something to gain. Let's go with a different one that I had some interest in, Charlie Rose. How much reading have you done into that case? What do you know about the accusers? What do you know about Charlie Rose? Let's hypothetically say that Charlie Rose wasn't a predator as much as an asshole to his employees-- which the stories will actually support as well. Let's observe that these women coming forward no longer work for him. Is it possible they wanted to tear the guy down because they just got in a mood, or that he caused some damage to their careers, or whatever else? Maybe. The sniff test as you describe it in this case, it's impossible to trigger unless you were already a big follower of Charlie Rose, because it takes digging to even find a reason to trigger it. But does the necessity for digging mean that it's not there? That's kinda where it starts to come apart. There should always be a compulsion to dig. We shouldn't assume someone is lying, but we also shouldn't assume they're telling the truth because they have "nothing to gain" because inherently to know if there's something to gain you often need to dig. --- No problem! I hated girls and didn't really care much for them and started dating like 5-6 girls... As many as 4 at once at a time. One of those girls had a boyfriend. I knew she did. She knew I knew she didn't. We still started an about 6 month long relationships. We eventually had sex. And we had sex multiple times after. And continued dating. As we were continually dating I started hearing from people asking why I raped this girl. And I was like wtf are you talking about. It turned out her actual boyfriend found out we were dating and she freaked and said I raped her trying to stop him from dumping her. I had to fill out a report detailing everything and with corrobating witnesses of us dating to have that squashed. I even still kept dating the girl off and on after cuz I was dumb.
