Fear of God. The rounds where you only need 1 save to be safe. Doing that in a top 5-10 would mean the round lasting all of 20-30 seconds

Terra was once one of the most dominant characters in this thing. She has 14 top 25 appearances in 19 contests, and she's tied with Cecil and Kuja for the most top tens with 9. She also has the second longest streak of consecutive top 10s with six from CV to CX. Now while she hasn't been bad in recent years (aside from a couple of lower half finishes), she hasn't been as good. As such, her STATS have been in a slow decline. This is actually the first year her numbers have gone up since CXIII. With this finish, Terra moves up slightly from 77.27% to 77.52%, staying at 7th place overall.

This is Terra's best finish in the New Era, so her numbers are noticeably worse but still solid. She increases from 59.87% to 63.56%, passing Faris, Laguna (for now), and Hope to move from 29th to 26th place. In the Old Era, Terra was #2 behind only Kuja at 83.96%.

I think Lightning would have to win against a 'pet' character of some sort. Like a character who isn't very popular, relied heavily on trades to get where they are. If they achieve any sort of natural momentum they'll just roll over her I think.

Not sure why I got the urge to do this but... here's my ranking on the chances for Lightning to win against every character.

Lightning's favor
1. Lulu - Unlike FFIX, I think the FFX fanbase actually does care about repeats, and FFX's stock in general this contest seems low for trash fodder saturation reasons
2. Tidus - See Lulu, but more people actually like Tidus
3. Rinoa Heartilly - I think her and Lightning are pretty similar in terms of the nature of their fanbases and hate bases, but Lightning is just more popular.

Slight lean to Lightning win
4. Dangerous Ariana - She's surviving but it feels more like through aggressive trading than anything. I just don't really think she's a character that profiles as one that will naturally gain momentum. It's not a joke a lot of the savers will care about, and I feel like overall Brave Exvius's stock has only tanked since this contest started.
5. Red Mage - If Circus stays out of this Lightning would wreck. If he doesn't I could see RM scumming out a victory, somehow. He does claim he's done with this but who knows.

Toss up
6. Cloud Strife - Normally I'd favor Cloud but MWC can find a way to lose this.
7. Kain Highwind - Kinda weak, but enough appeal that I think he's a bit stronger than Lightning. But only a bit. It'd definitely be up in the air.
8. Tifa Lockhart - I don't really feel like Tifa has a lot of passionate supporters. I think Lightning would win the lion's share of ambivalent votes.

Leaning Lightning loss
9. Oerba Dia Vanille - Honestly think that outside the Lightning cult Vanille is more popular, but I don't have much to substantiate this. Could definitely be SFFed pretty hard.
10. Minwu - If he makes it to the final I think his momentum will blow past her. Underdog factor strong.
11. Gau - Similar to Minwu but probably less overlap with her votebase
12. Barret Wallace - Similar to Minwu and Gau. More general charisma than the two of them I think.
13. Cecil Harvey - Just stronger than her. Repeat winner syndrome only hope Lightning has, but I don't feel it's something Cecil supporters care about.

Lightning has no chance
14. Laguna Loire - It's hard to dislike Laguna. I think he'd capitalize strong on Lightning's hate base and ride through
15. Zidane Tribal - The insipid FFIX fanbase has proven it isn't above repeats and Zidane is tough to beat
16. Squall Leonhart - Stronger than Lightning in every regard in a final I feel

Well in Lulu's case her win was a long time ago (CII) - most if not all of her current supporters weren't around then.

I'd still put her as one of the weakest in a final though.

Also my logic for expected repeat bias tends to come from how diverse the top entries tend to be

FFX generally has a few doing well, but it's not a lock between Rikku, Tidus, Yuna, Auron, hell even Seymour once in a while, who is going to do best.

FFIX it's basically always Zidane or Vivi

FFIV it's basically always Cecil

No idea if that's sound but that's what makes sense to me. I think higher vote volatility in general seems bad for repeat winners. FFVI would be closer to the FFX category though.

I think the amazement of Lulu of all people being our 2nd repeat helps, every year Lulu's the #1 "wait how did they actually win a contest" of the former champs which kinda makes me enjoy the idea of her becoming a Repeat

Plus, Lulu was the 2nd smfffc champion so it fits for her to be the 2nd Repeat Champion

I feel like every character you listed under "leaning Lightning loss" are the characters I'd give her the best chance to beat.

I think you overestimate how many people would jump on Minwu or Gau if they aren't already supporting them this deep into the contest. I mean, their chances of making the finals are pretty low overall, so if they did make the finals, it would mean something strange happened, so who knows.
