https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2017/11/21/uber-hack-exposes-data-of-57-million-users-and-drivers-report-says.html

Hackers stole data from 57 million Uber users and drivers in 2016.

The hackers stole names and driver's license numbers of around 600,000 drivers in the U.S., as well as rider names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers.

According to Bloomberg, the company paid hackers $100,000 to delete the data and keep the breach quiet, and did not report the incident.

Location history, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers or dates of birth do not appear to have been stolen

It happened a year ago and they were just hiding that it happened while paying ransom, so you're probably not affected.

it should be illegal for companies to withhold when they've been hacked and the information stolen from users

if they were hacked in 2016 why are we finding out in 2017

Personally only taken uber once. Was waiting for the last metro train of the night and apparently it was an hour late. A few of us waiting were talking and one of the guys was going to uber the same spot I parked my car and I joined him. Didn't pay anything.

Yes, because a group of hackers who would illegally access and copy personal data could certainly be trusted to actually delete their copies of said data and not just claim they did.

Fuckin' idiots.

Their statement came nine hours ago, so that's still 11 months at best where they kept this hidden.

I know that's the real reason, it's just stupid to tack on "and delete the data" when anybody more intelligent than an average CEO could tell you that part of the bargain won't be held up.

there is also the claim that if the hacker breaks the code, no company will pay the extortion fee anymore

they need to be credible

lol on that though

I'm sure part of the deal is uber wouldn't give authorities any info to identify the hackers. Keeping information helps accomplish that
