Iirc the years right right before the PS4/xbone released were really good

Devs were comfortable developing in the systems finally and could get creative. I remember the year with last of us and BioShock infinite being very good

That was the year those systems were released, actually

Even if you wrongly think that P5 isn't an all-time classic,

Classics get defined by transcending past hardcore gamers. If this were not the case there would be many all time classics. P5 will never do this.

What

What what.
2 million sales does not make

Super Metroid sold less than 2 million copies. Does that mean it's not a classic?

Most classics don't transcend past the "hardcore". Like typical people don't read the Odyssey for fun or listen to Beethoven on a regular basis. That's completely irrelevant to if it's a classic or not

Then there are levels to being a classic. Persona may be a classic, but it is definitely not an all time classic as the original statement.

Might be mere coincidence, but 2017 is also the year least defined by Western releases in quite some time.

The best selling games of 2017 are Call of Duty: WW2, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Destiny 2, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

I don't know how you go about defining a year, but surely any working definition has to include the industry leaders.

I am also not entirely convinced by this idea that Japan is resurgent because we got good Mario and Zelda console games in the same year.

To be clear, I wasn't one of Japan's naysayers before this year either.

For me 2017 felt like kind of a slower year for releases. Agreed BoTW (still haven't beaten that yet), Odyssey, and whatnot are great. Yakuza 0 which hit in English this year is another big one, and Sonic Mania is cool. Persona 5 is cool and charming but I didn't get super far before putting it on the backburner. It'd potentially make a better anime series than a game to me, but I dig that it really hits the spot for a lot of people.

If we included Final Fantasy XV, which hit just over one month prior to 2017, that'd help 2017 as well, loved that game. 2016 was pretty good for me.

I'll go with the mentioned 2015 appreciation, MGSV (though divisive) has not been topped for me yet. And Arkham Knight I felt was a terrific and underrated game.

Super Mario 3D World is a terrific game by the way, enjoyed it a lot, it hit the spot quite a bit in 2013, and GTAV is another huge hit with me for that year. Lot of great years to choose from.

Does that mean 2016 was a Japan-defined year because it was the first year this decade that the best-selling game was Japanese?

Yeah, I've heard lukewarm things about CoDWW2 despite the sales. The biggest stories I've seen regarding Western releases this year have definitely leaned negative (Andromeda, Battlefront 2) while the big Japanese games (again - Zelda, Mario, P5, Nier, RE7) released with a ton of positive reaction among gamers, and they seem to have maintained that through the year.

don't ask me to define something I don't agree with. and the best-selling game of 2016 was Call of Duty. it is always Call of Duty. well, except this year when it's PUBG.

I think it reveals a personal blindspot when you talk about reception and completely ignore popularity. it's not something you can dismiss because you feel the feedback has been lukewarm. even if that's the case, more people are going out and buying the new Call of Duty or DICE shooter than Mario or Zelda. how is that not taken into consideration?

Let's say that we can ignore that elephant in the room; is 2017 all that special in terms of Japanese video game output? a cursory look at the last few years reveals multiple Japanese games that captured hearts and wallets at a roughly equal rate. 2016 had Dark Souls 3, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy XV, Pokemon Sun/Moon, and a million Fire Emblem games. 2015 had Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid V, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Xenoblade X, and Monster Hunter 4. 2014 had Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Smash 4, Dark Souls 2, and Danganronpa, 2013 had Mario 3D World, A Link Between Worlds, Pokemon X/Y, Fire Emblem Awakening, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Animal Crossing. you can nitpick at this selection of games but I don't think it's all that different from 2017's games. million-sellers, GOTY contenders, series revivals, or otherwise well-received games, just like the ones frequently mentioned from this year.

It is undeniable that Nintendo had an incredible year. Mario and Zelda have always been the series most Nintendo fans hold dear to their hearts, and they each released series-defining games this year. But I think the 'Japan is back!' idea is a little much, and not an accurate representation of the industry. It's more like a confluence of events - the collapse of the handheld market which doesn't hold mainstream online appeal in the west, Nintendo releasing a home console people care about again, Japanese devs further embracing platforms favoured in the west like PS4 and PC, the Persona team finally releasing a game, and Japanese devs repeating the pace they've had for several years - but that's not as catchy and reflective of why I'm not in marketing.

eh it's not really fair to compare sales between multiplayer and single player games. Of course, multiplayer games sell more because people buy them just to play with their friends even if they don't like it a whole lot.

Looking at critical and user reviews, the top games are Mario, Zelda, and Persona so I'd say it has been a bit of a resurgence in that regard. Obviously they didn't sell as well as CoD and PUBG because they're single player, not as many people have a Switch, and Persona is a more Niche series.

A Hat In Time
Cuphead
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
Destiny 2
Digimon World: Next Order
Divinity: Original Sin II
Everybody's Golf
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Horizon Zero Dawn
Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Little Nightmares
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Mass Effect: Andromeda
Nier: Automata
Nioh
Persona 5
PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
Pokemon US/UM
Pyre
Super Mario Odyssey
Tales of Berseria
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands
Trails in the Sky: Third Chapter
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Yakuza 0
Yakuza Kiwami

all came out this year. I would say this is the best year of gaming ever just because of the sheer number of games on that list I want to play (18) which I think is unprecedented for me. And some of these that I have already played (Nier, Persona 5, Botw) are all amazing games.

I don't think any other year has the depth, variety and quality to compare to this year
