I laugh because most of, if not all of, the gentrification in NYC is done by young hipster progressives.
Brooklyn, for example. How do I know? People whom I grew up with in white suburbia after graduating college all fled to these areas. All are liberals. I've seen it first hand. Park slope, Canarsie, Williamsburg. And park slope is a perfect example because most of the residents are old school Italian folk. Who have lived in rent controlled apartments until the past 8 years when yuppies began moving in. Small businesses followed once the neighborhood cleaned up. Such businesses like this coffee shop. Gentrification is neither a racial or political issue. Its just a "this shit hole area was made a respectable place to live". Albeit price increases are inevitable once that happens only because of the sudden desire to live in the area. --- http://i.imgur.com/Rqk1DYV.gif - Super Bowl XXI/XXV/XLII/XLVI Champions - NY Giants Eli Manning SB tracker: 2/2 Superbowls 2/2 SBMVP's ... I remember watching a predominately white city gentrify over the course of ten years. It was sad.
The people that use to live there were blue collar types and retirees. Buying my lunch there was once highly affordable. But I was the first of a burgeoning tech hub growing in the center of the city. You go there now, and everything is upscale. The businesses I use to frequent, like this one mom and pop diner, are gone. All the old homes are gone too, replaced with track homes and McMansions. And what happened to the original community? Most moved, but the retirees left behind are homeless and living out of their cars or at cheap hotels. I arrive at work just before daybreak, and the parking lots at hotels and supermarkets are packed with cars and trailers. The city leaves a few outhouses in these lots for the people to use. --- "But who prays for Satan? Gentrification, like a lot of things, has winners and losers. Imagine a company being acquired by a bigger company and then firing 90% of its original staff and then filling in those spots with their own staff. It would be rather insensitive to say something like "The company is more profitable, therefore this is a win!".
To the people it is not a win to, it is a slap in the face. Even to the people who it is a win to, they (if they are liberal) do not want to be reminded that they are contributing to the displacement of low income residents of a community. --- "I'm not racist but, BLM sure did make me racist." -Skasa I'm just here to offer you advice, take it or leave it. ... A_Good_Boy posted..._RETS_ posted...A_Good_Boy posted... Agreed. Imo it's more insensitive to think that the people that lived there should just quit instead of trying to take advantage of the boom in their area. Or just assume they will be kicked out. As others have said, if you own a home and the area becomes more desirable, congrats your home just doubled or tripled in value. Had a minimum wage job or low paying job before? Or had continuous unemployment? Well congrats cause with the influx of money and new residents comes new jobs and opportunities. As with my Brooklyn scenario, industrial and urban areas once gentrified became hot locations for major stores like IKEA, whole foods and other stores. A lot of independently owned restaraunts, food markets and coffee shops. This won't happen for everyone. But don't be so ignorant to the fact that opportunities open up to those who want to take them. --- http://i.imgur.com/Rqk1DYV.gif - Super Bowl XXI/XXV/XLII/XLVI Champions - NY Giants Eli Manning SB tracker: 2/2 Superbowls 2/2 SBMVP's ...
