Eternal Sonata was... okay-ish. NieR is infinitely better.

Nier tbh. I've only played Eternal Sonata between those two, and while the premise is interesting and the gameplay is pretty good (not to mention the music), it doesn't do nearly enough interesting with the premise to make the story worth it. Literally just a generic JRPG plot but with a famous pianist involved. Nier definitely has a better story between the two.

I did like the ambiguity of whether or not he was actually in a dream; stuff like not actually being as omniscient as he thinks he is, and a playable character being named after a genre of music he wasn't around for. But then he mostly takes a backseat to the actual plot, and resolves the stable time loop Polka's trapped in just by sheer virtue of it actually being a dream after all and he can do whatever the fuck he wants. And yeah that was pretty dumb! Then that whole Shape of Life skit at the very end? That was kinda weird!

Plus it takes him away as a playable character right at the end when you need him the most. (Well, I did, because I used him a lot and he was one of my strongest characters at the time.)

It had some good potential to be a great story, but then it fell flat on its face at the end.
