it wasn't the main point, it just so happens the first response to this topic brought up race and so i responded to it.

I understand what you meant but I feel TC has a completely valid point. It was an OK horror movie with a racial undertone almost forced into it.

Again, the racial undertone wasn't "forced." It's the whole reason the movie was written this way.

Maybe so, but I feel like the movie would of had the same effect without it.

"Guy goes to gfs house but family are secretly insane. Btw we threw some race in there as well"

I don't think they jelled very well.

Oddly enough, you would be in the minority. Lol. But you're definitely welcome to your opinion.

ITP it's OK to stereotype an entire racial group as long as you have personal anecdotes that supports said stereotypes and that you are a member of the racial group you are stereotyping.

Eh, Im done. I honestly don't know how you feel about racial issues and I shouldn't be making assumptions at one person for how I view this boards population. If you were one of those people this conversation probably would of went a different way now that I think about it. I just really liked the movie lol

i meant it wasn't the 'main point' of why i wasn't thrilled or impressed with the film. i wasn't like "damn i would have loved that movie if it didnt shove racial issues down my throat", which my comment sort of sounded like.

but apparently there were lots of references and things i completely missed out on (but SArm won't educate me so idk), which may explain my lackluster thoughts on the movie.

edit: ive been educated now.

No one itt has even remotely explained in any way how the social commentary in the movie is effective, or even deeper than what my original post stated.

If anything people have posted evidence that it's even worse than that. Lol

Too much to unpack. And I feel like if I started explaining things like the significance of Jesse Owens, the father's admitted hatred of bucks (after Chris and Rose accidentally hit a deer), the auction for Chris's body, the mom using a silver spoon to hypnotize Chris, what the sunken place is, the blind man who literally cannot see color yet still profits from his position of advantage, Chris tearing through the couch and forcing himself to pick the cotton out in order to plug his ears and save himself, and the police car showing up at the end, that'd just be information overload for you. If you want to think the racial angle was "forced" then I really can't stop you. The film obviously isn't for everyone.

i did like it, i just didn't think it was anything special. IIRC it had a 100% on RT when it came out and everyone I know who saw it loved it. i was expecting a similar level of enjoyment (4 or 5 / 5) and didn'g get nearly that much out of it. it was entertaining, but nothing more.

as for why, it was terribly predictable and the plot itself just didn't "wow" me a whole lot. i didn't have that feeling of "damn that was a good movie" when the credits rolled.

do you get the imagery sarm just pointed out to you?

there is a thing in art called depth

meaning there is more meaning to dig into

casual action films rarely have this

casual horror films also rarely have this

but let me ask you if after reading sarm's comment, do you believe this movie has depth?

I think what TC is trying to say (at least I think) is you can take away race from the movie and it still stands as a movie...despite the director himself saying race played a big part. I mean yeah technically it did but it's easy to just say that rather than actually feel it

You can't take take racism from American History X for example...it would be a very short movie otherwise. I feel like you can with get out and I would still enjoy it as the horror movie it is.

holy shit yeah, a lot of that i didn't even notice.

i had no idea that 'bucks' was ever a reference to black men. call me ignorant of history for that one, i guess.

at the time i didn't notice the silver spoon at all, i just saw a spoon in a cup.

don't understand what the 'sunken place' is outside if being trapped inside one's own body. perhaps that's due to more ignorance on my part, idk.

and the cotton balls were also totally lost on me, as in i saw him pull the things out of his ear but didn't think "ah, yes, picking cotton"

so you're right, those things flying right over my head probably did lessen the experience for me <_<

Sure you could. It would have no social commentary though which is by far a bigger aspect than horror in it.

To be fair to you though, this movie has sparked a lot of great conversations where my black friends are pointing all this stuff out and many of my white friends are saying "Are you sure you're not making this up? We didn't catch any of this." And the black friends are like, "We know! That's kind of the point of the movie!"

Also consider the dad's admiration for Jesse Owens, and how he showed Hitler that Aryans are not the best race by winning the Olympics

What the dad took from that is that black people are the superior race. That's why they exclusively put their brains into black people's bodies. Really he has the exact same mindset Hitler did, he just chose a different race to feel is superior.

The whole party/auction scene was great with the layered meanings.

Like you think back on the whole possession angle and it makes sense. But underneath that the entire scene is commentary on people who glorify and fetishize being black while simultaneously dehumanizing them as individuals and stripping away their culture. Every single person in that scene is commentary for society in some way. Even the blind guy (especially the blind guy).

I like the old white guy who possessed the guy from the beginning of the movie. He claims that being black is the same as being white. Yet the guy is afraid to leave his house now after the change..

Athletically superior. He didn't respect their minds or culture. He thinks white people can use their bodies to their full advantage.

it does lack many of the elements that typically characterize horror, I suppose, though in reality it isn't too different from scream except for the mask
