I don't like this. Not because I don't have the RAM, I do. But I feel like it doesn't need to run nearly as many of these processes as it is running. But I've found out how to completely delete any of the intrusive monitoring crap they put in this without breaking the OS, so that's cool.

I'm going to play Devil's advocate and say that Windows 10 is still free so the fact that it snoops on its users is somewhat expected. They have to make money somehow.

Which of those processes should one delete? I recently got a new Windows 10 laptop myself, and while I have RAM by the boatloads, I'd rather not have that snooping stuff active.

Well...I don't want to go into the specifics but basically any copy of Windows 7 that is activated can be upgraded to 10 at no cost. Completely free and legal.

BTW: Do you use grocery store member cards for savings? Do you use gmail/yahoo? Yelp? Which ISP? Firefox or Chrome?

Allllll of the above snoop and gather personal data.

defrag is turned off and TRIM is used instead.

Yeah, I know about that but I thought prefetch was too because the access time negates any need to preload applications into RAM based on predicted use.

Windows 10 will expand its memory usage if you have the reserve, and it uses this to prefetch data and make loading speeds quicker. You'll also notice the speed difference when the computer comes out of sleep mode.

If you have the extra memory, no reason to object to a program using it to make your experience better.

Short of on cpu cache, there is literally no other fast place to store stuff than RAM, prefetch is still used.

I had to turn this off manually. I had to do that to a few settings actually. Fuck Windows 10

Jesus fuck it's still going. Everything takes forever to load, even characters while typing apparently. How do they even make something so slow. And to think software engineers will get more and more shit to compensate for newer and faster PC hardware.

Oh THAT. That's not a standard update, that's a new version of Windows 10.

I thought you were complaining about the usual update cycles. That's considerably bigger and more significant. It's probably in the area of like 10 GB of data.

Though I do agree that software engineering has taken a shit as a whole. Nothing gets tested anymore on the premise of "we'll patch it when it's out", which is absolute nonsense because very often common problems end up unfixed with this mentality. I don't even know who's making those decisions.

No it didn't. I could do it right now if I had a Windows 7 or 8/8.1 machine available. It's still free.

I was doing it a lot at my last company because part of government contracting required the HDDs be encrypted and Windows 8 Pro onwards contains BitLocker (only the Enterprise version of Vista and 7 had it). Since MS never stopped issuing free copies of Windows 10 upgrades, I upgraded machines that were still running Windows 7 whenever they came back from an outbound employee to Windows 10 in order to make this happen. Never once stopped being free. I also upgraded several of my own machines to Windows 10 after the supposed "drop-dead" date for free copies and even a year on from that date (it happened right before they launched Version 1607, "Anniversary") you can still do it with zero hassle.

Right? I do programming for work and Visual Studio 2017 is such a pile of garbage. Every day I'll hit easily reproducible bugs that have existed for months and months, and searching them shows they're very common. It's such an annoyance. Never had much issue with previous versions.

If the biggest software company in the world is churning out this crap what hope does this profession have
