I actually just want clarification because there is a contradiction there as you pointed out. So I'm curious what his take is on that. Which part is being misunderstood. Like most things I can see "okay that's where the miisunderstanding was" and this one I can't even make a guess so I'm asking him to clarify why there's an apparent contradiction there.

Also I've never called anyone an idiot for misunderstanding what anyone has said. I've called them dishonest and perhaps treating these topics like more of a battle than than they should.

This is why liberals and conservatives butt heads so much. We view things for what it is with a more common sense approach. They view things as society having to be progressing toward some fantasy utopia.

We are this is what it is. They are more this is the way we want it to be.

You can argue we are not trying to provide betterment while you can argue they live in a fantasy land bereft of realism.
