Nu Metal is the last time Rock was still big in pop culture, had famous bands and videos and were invited to perform at awards shows and made a lot of popular movie soundtracks

After that punchline band Nickleback dominated for a few years which meant a bunch of just as horrendous copy bands like Hinder, theory of a deadman ect emerged. Once Nickleback finally faded Rock was truly dead. Rock radio now practically only plays old classic rock and 90s grunge, with occasionally pop bands like 21 pilots and imagine dragons I'm guessing just so they can say they play popular new songs (even if those bands fit far better close to maroon 5 and katy perry lmfao)

Some great newish rock acts that have put out good shit recently. None particularly obscure

Then you have older acts like Queens of the Stone Age etc still doing their thing

But the radio sucks bro its the age of the internet who gives a god damn

I would venture that emo rock/pop punk like MCR, FOB, AFI, Evanescence, was one of the last gasps of rock in the late 2000's. Not saying it was as big or mainstream as acts like Nickelback but it was definitely trendy for a time with teens - just a few years ago Fall Out Boy still had some singles that got a lot of attention, deserved or not, like with 'Thanks for the Memories'. Green Day with American Idiot kind of fed into that overall sentiment as well, especially with how they dressed in that era. Edit: ok yeah, even that song was from 2007, there you go.

Thats because the people that give a fuck arent listening to music in a way that creates hits anymore

TC mentioned pitchfork, all the bands I mentioned get coverage and reviews on there, Stereogum, consequence of sound, av club, etc, they get booked on the mid level of festival lineups, and most of them regularly sell out shows (I myself have been to sold out shows for many of them at mid sized venues (~500-1000))

Far from being obscure local bands

Meh it's still rock. They fucking shred live. There's only one song I'd consider pop or hip hop on their album.

I'm pretty sure this is a poor point of reference as to a bands obscurity, what do 17 year olds know about rock music? Good rock music is out there, it's just not going to be spoonfed to you, you need to go digging. To name one good recent rock band - sheer mag.

If you're expecting a band to be the next "savior of rock and roll" you're waiting for Godot, little buddy. The music game is different in many ways and there's not a singular source of media that a band can just dominate and command the attention of the nation like what used to happen with new rock acts that would stir up the collective in a frenzy. This doesn't mean rock is dead. Can't you consider that this means rock is evolving? Why does it have to mean that rock is dead?

Also, did you bother to listen to the band I listed as proof that modern rock is not dead? If not I would recommend you do so. It might just open your mind up a little, which is never a bad thing.

Whether or not you still think there are good modern rock bands out there is completely irrelevant
