Yeah I think general consensus among the modern anime community is that 2011 is probably the best year in "modern" anime. What you want to say is modern anime is up for debate. But 2011 generated 3 shows that are in my top 5 (Steins;Gate, Penguindrum, Chihayafuru) and this does not even mention major shows that were released that I don't even like that much (such as Fate and Ano Hana).

Like I gave out 4 10s during the year (the three on my favorites and also to madoka). 2009 and 2010 only saw me give out 1 each year (to FMA: BH and K-on S2). In fact besides 2011 I seem to have like a 10 a year or something and you guys know how much I watch. That's how much I think 2011 stands above at least for their best shows versus other years.

I gave 4 series a 10 in 2011. That compares to 8 in 2008, or 5 in 2010, or 10 in 2007, or 4 in 2013. Not a particularly extraordinary year for me.

Majikoi would be a strong contender for most disappointing anime of 2011 given how many people loved the VN and how terrible the show was. 2011 has a lot more shit than I realized looking at a list of everything that came out. A lot of the worst anime I have ever watched were from this year....damn integrity viewing was the worst idea

that's going to happen when like a ton of shows are being released. I personally don't think that a year should be judged like on the average quality of the shows but by how many great shows it manages to produce. Like 2011 has my highest year since 2011 onwards because I have a hard time comparing like years before that where I have like a third of the shows to even less from that point on.

However I will give that 2007-8 are both extremely strong years.

I am aware a couple of those are ones people wont agree with me on which is why theyre around the top. Every show from Deadman down is most likely considered not good by many people/places.

I never said anybody was weird for liking 2011 so much either. I was only saying that even though there were a lot of good shows that there were also several not good shows with most of those being the worst anime Ive ever seen in general. I still consider 2011 a good year for anime, but its also the year that sorta killed how I watch anime because I was watching way too much and not enjoying a whole lot of it. After that I tried to stick to only shows I would potentially like without really gambling on iffy shows

Carnival Phantasm had a lot of very funny parts, though it did force me to confront the reality that Tsukihime wasn't very good. It also had a JAM Project ED, so really it was perfect in every way.

Fun bad anime facts:

2016 is the only year with two shows I've given a 1/10 to (The Great Passage and Girls Beyond the Wasteland)

Fall 2015 had 3 shows I gave a 2/10 to and a 3/10 show. That makes it the worst season for bad shows I've ever watched.

2011 has a single 1/10 show (Fractale) and three 2/10s (Majikoi, Idolmaster, Nyanpire) which is pretty bad.

This is all just for shows I completed too. Adding those would give me another 1/10 for 2011 (Kimi to Boku) and 2 2/10s (Heaven's Memo Pad and Mayo Chiki). I typically don't give shows that I drop super horrible scores though, since I drop them before I come to really hate them most of the time.

Some of them were, but there were still quite a few popular ones in there. Nichijou is honestly probably more mixed than you might think too. There were plenty of people who didnt care for it much. I dont know if most of the jokes just dont translate well to English or if they were just legitimately bad jokes.

Mirai Nikki just sorta baffles me altogether. Both protagonists are completely and utterly terrible. They were so bad I couldnt even stand to watch it anymore and there was maybe one or two not terrible characters in the episodes I watched. I think I saw about half of it.

Even most people who like AnoHana will admit it had a lot of bad writing and basically all of it centered around Menma and the writers having literally no clue what to do about her interaction with the world/cast.

Madoka is definitely just my personal opinion. I dont think Ive seen anything really good by Urobuchi. He honestly strikes me as the sort of guy who faps to the most depressing and depraved porn there is since that seems to be about all he cares about.

Infinite Stratos was pretty popular and spawned some clone series or at least made those types of shows appear more. I think Eddv might be the only one who liked some of it though I dont think he liked S2.

Mirrai Nikki is a guilty pleasure and AnoHan, which I just watched, is a very flawed and infuriating series that still hit me emotionally (that play by play frustration was less than a month ago IIRC.)

But...if we're talking about the range of quality in anime over a year, it is really tough for me to accept either show as "bad" in the sense that they would drag down anything around them. More just acquired tastes. I have seen multiple people refer to Anohana as their favorite anime.

This is very disingenuous, and I wonder how many Urobochi shows you've actually watched through. There are far, far higher levels on the despair meter. Madoka stands out as something specifically designed to do so, and I think it's given him an exaggerated reputation.

Im not sure how much involvement he has had in some of the series I know his name was brought up for. Gargantia is the one of the 3 I like most and it was almost ruined towards the end. The other 2 series I saw with his name that Ive watched are Madoka and Psycho-Pass and I dont really care for either

He wrote every episode of Madoka and PP. I believe he wrote the first episode or two of Gargantia.
