Honestly, Cowboy Bebop is the best start. Do stuff like One Punch Man and Samurai Champloo once you're done, since those are short, also.

if you liked Death Note, you might like Monster. it's about a doctor that is hunting a serial killer. unlike Death Note though it is realistic. there is no supernatural stuff in it. and it takes place in europe but the main character is Japanese.
