I was depressed a lot but was different when I went out. Not intentionally, really, I just acted differently to be liked more and not be a buzzkill. Depending on the severity of the depression, you should probably deal with that before trying to get a girl. Itd make it easier.

I think depression, or any mental illness, is a turn off. That's just how it is. But if you can mask it or make it seem like it doesn't consume your life you'll have better luck at snagging women.

The person I'm currently pining after has depression and anxiety. It doesn't affect how I feel about him because his personality shows through it.

You'll find that most cases of a woman having a crush on a sulky guy who's loaded with personal problems are tied to his physical attractiveness.

Practically nobody rushes to try comforting and wooing a lonely ugly person. But when the guy's a hot piece of meat, yeah there's going to be a couple admirers lurking around who aren't scared off by the emotional baggage. Because they figure all they have to do is "fix" him and he can become their perfect boyfriend. Lonely women with nurturing codependent pasts have a tendency for this romanticized scenario.

This is also not exclusive to women. Gay and bisexual men can also demonstrate this type of attraction. And some hetero men can become similarly infatuated. Although the popularized "don't stick your dick in crazy" rhetoric cuts back back quite a bit of occurrences among the most wanted men (who can naturally be more selective in partners). They don't need to fix a partner; the best ones already come to them.

tl:dr: If you look like Joe Blow average and not a hottie, you're shooting yourself in the foot acting like a sad clown. Many single women have their own issues and are looking for someone to mop up their tears, not help you with yours. Ordinary/ugly + depressed = twice as unattractive.

That's what I meant by self loathing or optimistic. If someone is self loathing they are constantly just showing their worse qualities. If someone is still optimistic than the good qualities are still apparent through the depression. You might not even know they are depressed unless you pay attention or they are open about it

No one in my real life knew I had either depression or anxiety, just thought I was really shy and timid. I'd still try to interact with people, and most people consider me a happy go lucky type of person. It's you guys that get my real feelings, because I can't express them to anyone in person.

It also sucks that it feels like a big portion of my depression stems from not ever having a girlfriend, or anyone interested, then you get told that you shouldn't pursue what you feel you need, until after you're fixed somehow. Catch-22.
