Not as good as Super Metroid, but good. Seemed pretty damn linear for a Metroid game, though. I remember getting thoroughly lost in the NES original, but this one was so straightforward. I felt like whenever I got momentarily stumped there was obviously only one place to go, but when I got stumped in Super Metroid I had like three places I could think of where I might be able to make progress. Is that just what happens when you add a map to the first Metroid and take away some of the bullshit parts? Maybe it's not Zero Mission's fault since they had to work with a shitty map.

I will say that it was pretty cool how they incorporated abilities from later games back into it. The extra part tacked on after Mother Brain was nice too even though it didn't feel much like true Metroid gameplay.

It's probably my second favourite Metroid game after Super Metroid.
I'm not entirely sure where I would put Metroid Samus Returns(3DS) though.

There's at least one sequence break and you can do a few things out of order.

It's not that linear, just newer and is a bit easier to know where you can go. Fusion, however, is linear. I assume you're gonna be playing that one next?

It's a great revamp of the original Metroid, but I think I had more fun with Super Metroid Zero Mission.

I wish Nintendo would actually consider doing proper 2d pixel based sequels again.

Metroid Fusion was my favorite game besides Pokemon when it first came out. The SA-X gave me the creeps.

I actually think Super Metroid is sort of overrated.

I like Metroid Prime more, ultimately.

Zero Mission was amazing. For those of you looking for more 2D Metroids, also try out AM2R, it's good.

I don't really care about sequence breaks on my first time through a game, though. Super Metroid seemed like it constantly had multiple places to go without them being sequence breaks. There were some cases like that in ZM, sure, but usually it was at the beginning of a sub-area, and then you'd take one path and it would often be one-way so it would be obvious that you have to just continue forward and loop back around later.

Either that or Prime was going to be my next Metroid game, yes. If Fusion is more linear than this, that sounds like it will be pretty disappointing.

I beat Zero Mission over the summer and it's good, but it's overrated in my opinion. It's far too short and you get so many abilities very quickly.

Actually, it was my favorite game in the whole Metroid series. Maybe I'm just a scrub, but I got stuck in Super Metroid too many times to enjoy it thoroughly.

ZM has great replay value(most Metroid games do)

It's just really fun to do sequence breaks

Okay, Fusion is weird. There are some okay secret paths within each section, but it is pretty linear overall just going through segment by segment. Other Metroid games boil down to that to some point, but there are multiple entry points and the sections feel much more interconnected. I'm less than halfway through but I haven't seen anything yet to suggest that there will be any direct links between sections.

The setting and the computer orders feel off to me. It's missing that exploratory, isolated vibe I've come to expect from Metroid games. I didn't like the waypoints in Zero Mission but at least they were just waypoints. Getting instructed on things like "electrified water will hurt you" is lame.

As I play Fusion more, I think the biggest thing I dislike is how scripted all the sequences are. It reminds me of a lot of 3D Zelda games, but even in those you're usually given some room to wander away from the main objective. It's so annoying when I want to return somewhere that required my new ability, only to find that the door has been destroyed, or there is some larva in the way, or the doors have been locked down. It feels like I'm being made to explore only when the game wants me to. I don't like having trigger events determine where I can go, that should all be based on abilities.

The sequence breaks were intentionally put in though, which makes it less fun.

Yeah, it's absurdly linear just by virtue of the game's layout.

Okay, I finished Fusion. It was alright, but I don't have any desire to replay it like I do with Super and ZM.

Pretty much my feelings, although I have replayed it once or twice. iirc, I can't remember if it even offers speed-running rewards.
