That seems like that could have gotten him killed or permanently paralyzed. Did they just not know about it at the time or did he break his neck during the match?

http://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/15460333/how-kurt-angle-won-olympic-gold-medal-broken-freakin-neck-20-years-on

Angle went for an MRI scan the next day and was told he had to rest and heal for six months. With the Olympic trials just two and a half months away, he cried his eyes out in the doctor's office.

"There were a lot of things that were going on. No doctor would clear me -- that was the most important thing, getting cleared," he said.

"Back then I was young and dumb, 26 years old, I didn't care about my health. I just wanted to get back into the game."

He was able to do some weight lifting and running. Despite crippling pain when he tried wrestling, he refused to give up on his quest to become an Olympic champion.

"Fortunately, I found a doctor either smart enough or stupid enough to allow me to wrestle," Angle said.

"He came up with a great concept that basically said, 'You can't train any more, and when you do try out for the Olympics, and at the Games if you make it, we'll shoot you in the neck with a bunch of novocaine so you can't feel the pain'.

"That's how I got through it. I could tell you an hour after each of my matches I was in excruciating pain, but in the long run it was worth it."

There were serious potential side effects of using the drug, and danger of grave injury -- "I was risking paralysis," he said.

That'd be box office gold and possibly oscar bait if they get the right director but is Kurt Angle even popular enough for a box office movie? A documentary I could see but this?

You do know wrestlers actually get her when they wrestle right? They use their real injuries for scripts but they are basically professional stuntmen that act. The story is scripted but sometimes the wrestlers actually go out and try to hurt each other. Used to happen a lot back in the old days. I swear people don't realize all the stuff that goes into wrestling and just think it's "fake".

For professional wrestling, no, they don't try to hurt each other at all. A great deal goes into training to prevent injuries. Lots of equipment they use is designed to be completely ineffectual as a weapon. When someone gets thrown through a glass window, that was actually sugar and not glass at all. The chairs they hit people over the head with are hollow, don't hurt (much) and make loud sounds when they do hit. Most peoples' fat asses would probably crush the chairs if they sat in them. The tables they through people through are flimsy and designed to break, etc. It's all about showmanship.

They've got next to 0 protection gear on their bodies and yet still have only a tiny injury rate compared to football where they are actually trying to hurt each other.

I didn't mean every single wrestling match. But sometimes guys would hate each other and they go out there trying to. used to happen quite a bit. Yes they are trained to not hurt each other but it does happen quite a bit. There are always injuries and sometimes they don't even report them. They do multiple shows during the week and their bodies are constantly smashed on objects. In fact for the blood, they use to do this thing called blading. Where they have a razor blade and cut their own foreheads open. Also mick foley is known for doing crazy stunts. like the choke slam off the cage, which knocked out some of his teeth and chipped some others. To say they are as safe as you amke it seem is ridiculous. you obviously don't watch the program or keep up with it, if you think they are really that protected. Oh and those tables? yeah they cut up people all the time. Oh and those hollow chairs, hulk hogan got tombstoned on one and got seriously injured. So yes, even though they do take some measures for their safety, it is almost full contact.

uhh behind the curtain they're pretty much all friends. No one hates each other.

The injuries are typically minor. A season-ending injury is extremely common in football. It almost never happens to where a wrestler is injured and is just out for the rest of the year. They have a very high emphasis on safety.

yutterh posted...

Yes, tiny tiny razors that did superficial cuts on the forehead and scalp because those places bleed a disproportionately large amount of blood out from small cuts. You'll notice they're always bleeding from the head and almost never bleeding from the nose, mouth, or any other part of their body.

yutterh posted...

Mick Foley went out of his way doing dangerous stunts and accidents happened like when his tooth came out of his nose. But without the safety precautions, you just can't throw someone off the top of a 2-floor cage and expect them to not be totally fucked up.

yutterh posted...

It's controlled acrobatics and stunt work. See this video here of Criss Angel being hit by a car:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-A-MpftYDc

There is no camera edit or special juxtaposition here. The reason it worked is because of the wall behind him. If he was standing out in the open he would have been killed. But because he's able to control the circumstances under which he's hit by a car, he can come out relatively okay. They don't tell the audience that the wall behind him is actually helping him, because intuitively, it looks like the wall should make the crash even worse.

Professional Wrestlers do things like this on their shows, just on a smaller scale.

This is why there are so many horror stories about kids trying out moves on their friends at home and people die right away.

I'm not good at block quotes like you lol so ill just do my best to respond.

where do you hear that they are all basically friends and no one hates each other? It is well known that HBK and bret heart had some shit going on outside of the ring. There are stories of people being bullied by managers and other talent. That doesn't happen as often now a day's but yes, there is drama in the back and no, not everyone is friends. I am not saying everyone in the locker room hates each other. please don't take what i am saying to the extreme, but the locker room wasn't and isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

The injuries are not always minor and i was using Mick Foley as example of how things used to be. I don't know where you got this idea that they are all safe. The whole Chris Benoit case changed a lot about how the WWE operated. People get concussions and torn legiments and muscles all the time. Where are you getting your information that they are minor injuries? Also yes career ending injuries happen. Daniel Brian is the most recent that i can think of with this kind of injury. He has taken too many concussions and cannot get back in the game. Before him the biggest i can think about was Edge.

Yes sometimes they do and it has been known to happen. Not on purpose but sometimes they do take hits to the face and gush blood from their noses, mouths etc. Sometimes they get caught on things and get cut on varies places of their body.

It is semi controlled acrobatics and stunt work. They are human and not all of the stunts go perfect. in fact i don't know if you ever heard of botchmania where it shows of all the stunts that they mess up on. Even professional stunt men get hurt. They are doing these stunts over and over and over again. Injuries happen quite often and their bodies do take a beating. the wrestling ring isn't even that cushiony.

Have you watched interviews of the wrestlers talking about the business and whats behind the curtain? A lot of the stuff you are saying is just not correct. Unless you worked in the industry and can tell me from first hand experience that all of the interviews and documentaries are all lying to push the product. which is in conspiracy nut territory.

No and it never is, but a good chunk of stage rivalry does not translate to malice backstage. If some people have beef with each other, that's their own personal issue, and usually results in people resigning / being forced to resign and not people literally getting the shit beat out of them on stage.

yutterh posted...

You're missing the frame of reference here. I am comparing the rate of injury between the wrestlers versus professional football players while noting that professional football players are covered head to toe in armor and still have a hilariously high severe injury rate. I'm not saying they don't get injured. Especially if there is an accident such as when a rope holding up Brett Hart snapped and he straight up died. I'm saying due to the extremely well rehearsed choreography and emphasis on safety, they avoid injuries. You, on the other hand, are coming out with this nonsense saying that they are actively trying to injure each other and that is flat out not true. They are trying to LOOK like they are injuring each other, but they're really just putting on a show.

yutterh posted...
Yes sometimes

A tiny fraction of the time, yes. It's theatrics, not a bloodsport.

Not being perfect does not mean that they are going out there on the ring intentionally trying to injure each other.

Okay we got things crossed here. I am not saying every single match and rivalry is real. That is insane to think. It is scripted. But back in the day yes they had some altercations that ended up in the ring. Once again I am not saying they all go out and fight and I am not saying it is a blood sport. It just seemed like you were down playing the dangers of wrestling and the backroom drama like everyone got a long and they were always safe. I am simply saying that there is a lot more too it then that. Just because it is scripted, doesn't mean people don't get injured and sometimes they do have real beef with each other.

I seen various interviews, sorry I can't give you exact ones but I watched stuff like the Monday night wars and stone colds podcasts. I seen others as well. But a lot of the grief and stuff they go through almost makes it seem like it's not worth it lol. My point is that they perform dangerous stunts that can severely hurt them if they go wrong. Some of the weapons they use don't always break right and can cause injury. Yes they do take a lot of precautions but that wasn't always the case. Before it was a man's sport and you had to accept the injury or quit. Safety wasn't always a priority and a lot of wrestlers got injured and it was pretty messed up industry back in the day.

Oh and it was Owen heart that was killed not his brother best heart. Oh and Owen heart legit broke stone colds neck on a batch pipesriver. So that's another serious injury that can happen.

Don't just limit backstage heat to Bret hating Shawn either. Pretty much everyone who wasn't part of the klique hated him, and the Harris twins threatened to kill him if they ever saw him again. Also undertaker famously taped his fists at the wrestlemania where Shawn was supposed to lose. If he refused to lose to Austin, 'taker was going to kick the shit out of him.

Then there's the instance of Bruiser Brody getting straight up murdered by (IIRC) assassin number 2 in Puerto Rico.
