Originally conceived as Cybertron, the show was to star Jason David Frank as Adam Steele taking on the forces of Grimlord. Jamie Kennedy also had a role as one of the comedy relief characters, and the dojo sensei Tao Chong was meant to be Adam's mentor and the person who introduced him to his powers. Footage came from the 1987 Metal Heroes series Choujinki Metalder. Soon after fan demand for Power Rangers resulted in JDF returning to the show as Tommy after the Green Candle episodes. Saban also came under fire from Hasbro over the show's name. Overall they changed things up. Adam Steele became Ryan Steele and Brad Hawkins was cast in the role. Then they decided to splice in the 1986 Metal Heroes series Jikuu Senshi Spielban. Sarah Brown and Michael Bacon being cast as Kaitlin and JB to fill those roles. Recurring characters were changed which resulted in Jamie Kennedy's departure. Tao Chong's character was altered and the mentor role went to the virtual Professor Hart. You could tell the distinct differences in the Japanese 80s footage to the original 90s American footage. Especially since the armored characters came from two completely different shows and were never on camera at the same time. When VR Troopers went into it's second season they gave Ryan a new suit which came from the 1984 series Space Sheriff Shaider. New sets were created with American actors filling in new roles for Grimlord and his troops.
