5 ghz wifi isn't bad unless you're at the edge of the transmission range. I've played online with the Xbone over wifi and never had any problems (with the router about 2 rooms distant from it)

Define "better"

Sure it has a higher max speed, but I can do everything on wireless just as good as on a cable with the added benefit of not having to be plugged in.

But if you have a shitty router or want to download a huge file, better to be wired

Wired is better than wireless, but if you have an even halfway decent router/provider, wireless will be sufficient for most things.

No, the wires are rated for a rather long diatance. From another site:

Cat 5 is 285 feet.
Cat 6 will go to around 700 feet or something of that length.

This is between routers, switches, or devices. No signal loss before that.

Wifi has signal loss pretty much immediately due to the large number of wireless frequencies used these days and interference from that.

I think wireles, 801.11ac, also caps out at like 500 mbps, though typically you'll see closer to 20 mbps since there is no way to prevent signal loss/interference. Cat5e, the most common ethernet cable these days, is good for supporting up to 1gbps and interference is little to none. Honestly you can get more out of cables than that, but whatever.
