BTW I love that the Switch is smart enough to boot the TV to the proper input channel even if its on another one.

AppleTV is the only other thing that does that I know of

no point in keeping something hooked up Ive touched maybe once in the past year, especially now that I have the switch versions of the two games I actually bothered to play during said year

I hate the motion controls, too, personally and it caused me to quit sooner than expected.

Like Nintendo managed to take all their games this year and make one really shitty game design choice that, while doesn't ruin them, actively hurts the games.

Inspired by Zelda 1, you have a number of dungeons to go to and power-ups to earn, and the world itself is generated by a seed you input so it's a bit different every time. The gameplay is just real solid top-down action adventure stuff, good feeling on the items and weapons, it feels really well put together.

What makes it special, to me, is how kind of trippy it is. The game is way more psychedelic than I expected, and it was easy to get really, really sucked into the world even with limited or unclear narrative. Great art, great music, fun writing for the little bit that exists. You eventually get like a hub you can teleport to where you can fuse elements onto the items.

Oh and instead of a boomerang you throw a top hat. I don't know why, but that's where they went with it and I kind of love it. The boss battles are pretty intense, though there's only a couple of them throughout the game.

Took me about 8 hours to play through one run, though I don't really remember how much backtracking and walking around aimlessly I did, because I was very high.

100% finished Mario Odyssey, aside from grinding out about 19,000 more coins to get the last few outfits

The Final Moon is really something. Took like a combined 4 hours to finally conquer it. Not sure if I loved it or hated it.

The harder version of the final boss it unlocks was a piece of cake though.

What a monstrous amount of content this game has.

Kinda surprised SMO toppled Zelda so soon. Zelda's still the better selling game if you account for Wii U sales, but only just.

Watched the GB QL for Blossom Tales this morning. It looks like a cool little LttP-alike. There's an entire category of surprisingly competent eShop games that look like RPG Maker trash dating back to the 3DS.

Mario traditionally stomps everything (pun intended) sales-wise on a platform except Pokmon, right?

Is it a big surprise the local multiplayer game isn't played as often as the epic single player or online games?

It's a fun game. The fact that it's on the list compared to the other titles is telling.

Archers in Fire Emblem Echoes might be the most overpowered class I've seen in a strategy game. There are classes in other games that are more ridiculous, but Archers offer so much effectiveness and have no weak points. In a game where enemies love to hide behind walls and are often made up of squishy mages, having six attack range and high killing potential is nuts. This is probably why the game barely gives you any of them!

finally beat zelda

switch says it took around 50 hours. iirc, it was maybe between 25-30 hours when i got through all 4 divine beasts. if i had gone straight to ganon afterward, i think i would have had a much lower opinion of this game, because even all the way to the end, i still hated the combat.

none of the main quest elements was particularly exciting, except maybe getting through hyrule castle. i would have also not given a single shit about zelda's plight if i didn't go out of my way to get all the memories and the master sword.

so i'm glad i set off to explore the rest of the world before i faced ganon! it's 100% the best thing about the game, just moving around in that space and finding stuff. i don't really remember any one specific place, puzzle, or challenge that resonated with me strongly, and i don't have any funny stories or clips to share. in fact, i just remember being annoyed at points like navigating the lost woods or anytime it was raining.

but it's just fun and chill to get up to a high point, look around for something cool in the vicinity, plot out where you wanna go, and just go there. i totally get now why people demand this level of freedom of exploration for all open worlds moving forward.

and hey, i grew to tolerate zelds's va the more cutscenes i saw. i actually ended up empathizing with her story. i kinda hate the fact that nintendo set up this arc for her too, knowing full well that the next game will still have her playing a similar role while this mute cipher called link still gets to be the hero.

so yeah, having never played a single zelda game before this, i appreciate the fact that i cared about the titular character by the end.

dream game: the openness, the systems-driven world, the restraint in presentation, and exploration mechanics of botw; the visuals, combat, qol smartness, and narrative ambition/cohesion of horizon; and the scale, character development, and worldbuilding of assassin's creed origins. hell, throw in the production value that rockstar puts into gta.

that would be dope
