In this topic, I will be posting a number of things. I will be posting a top 20 game of the year list, as well as a long list of 2017 games I played that I want to go back to, a long list of 2017 games I didn't get to that I want to play, a list of the best Android (mobile) games from 2017, my favorite soundtrack, favorite DLC and a few other things.

I'm putting effort into this because I tried really hard to play as much as possible from this year in 2017. I beat close to 35 games released in 2017, and played a further 20 or so enough to form an opinion. i only beat three or four old games this year.

whoever can guess my top five (before i get to no. 10 on my list) in order gets priority pick on my next key topic this is a once in a lifetime opportunity folks

Were going to start with .

the first three games on this list!

20. Snake Pass

http://store.steampowered.com/app/544330/Snake_Pass/
MINJ94N

One of my favorite games of all time is Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which would be an odd way to start this list if that game wasnt developed by Sumo Digital, who went solo for the first time this year. The fruits of their labors is Snake Pass, a 3D puzzle platformer where you control the most adorable snake to ever exist while trying to pick up collectibles in a series of levels. You control the snakes body with multiple grip points, and there are a bunch of different ways you have to manipulate your own body to climb and traverse the world. Its pleasant, but difficult, and ridiculously charming.

19. F1 2017

http://store.steampowered.com/app/515220/F1_2017/

This isnt a game that is going to appear on a lot of lists because its such a niche thing, especially around here. But F1 2017 is the first game in the series in a long time to get most of the things right. Its just a fantastic, beautiful, well-optimized version of the game and Ive played it for dozens of hours.

18. Immortal Redneck

http://store.steampowered.com/app/595140/Immortal_Redneck/
4imcG3i

Folks here might remember me hyping up a game called Ziggurat in recent years, and Immortal Redneck is a whole lot like that game. The setup is corny -- a redneck mummy with a cheesy voice actor who says cliche things that arent very funny -- but everything else about the game is inspired. The art style is nice, the enemy design is fantastic, the handling feels good, and there are a slew of weapons and upgrades that Ziggurat was mostly missing. Its a first-person shooter dungeon crawler roguelike with persistent upgrades but not much else. Its just real fun to play for 10 minutes or an hour at a time.

17. Flinthook

http://store.steampowered.com/app/401710/Flinthook/
wvgItx6

Flinthook is a game I havent played nearly as much as I want to, but it nails what its doing so well that I feel comfortable putting it on my list. Its a roguelike with persistent gold and upgrades, something extremely common, but this game is on another level. You control your dude in a 2D space, but your primary method of traversal is a grappling hook that feels as good as any grappling hook in any game. You fight through ships generated through pre-built parts trying to get to the boss to upgrade yourself further and it just plays so well. The graphics are also great, and the music is phenomenal. Its one that I feel is overlooked in the wake of early access hit Dead Cells, but its one that shouldnt be.

16. PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS

http://store.steampowered.com/app/578080/PLAYERUNKNOWNS_BATTLEGROUNDS/

PUBG is kind of a bad game. It looks awful, the graphics are horrendous, the game is buggy as hell, the actual amount of content is laughably low. The gunplay is bad -- really bad. Like astoundingly bad. Its bad in a way that you can still get very good at it, but even then, people who claim its good are just wrong. But something about this game and the zeitgeist around it was too good to pass up. The premise isnt unique, but its fully realized, and this game gets credit for that. It feels incredible to get a kill and a chicken dinner in the game. But for me, once I got that dinner, I didnt need to go back that much. For some people, going back was a must. I will play some more of it, for sure. I have to recognize how great it felt to be playing that game along with what seems like everyone else on the planet for a few months.

2017 DLC I Enjoyed

Dark Souls III: The Ringed City -- Its been several months since I played this, but I remember enjoying it immensely. It feels like Ive managed some amount of closure, something that Dark Souls games arent necessarily fond of providing me. The characters are good, the world is good, the challenge is good. The music is fantastic, the atmosphere is, predictably, perfect. It feels like something epic is happening the entire time and I want to go back and play the game over for the fifth or sixth time.

Vfht9M7

Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels -- What an inspired choice for DLC. They went all in on the Hot Wheels promotion, going beyond putting just a few full-size Hot Wheels cars, they have an entire world filled with orange and blue Hot Wheels track, complete with boost pads, giant sharks and dinosaurs eating the track, and a lot more. Its an extremely well-made piece of DLC and its an absolute joy to play from start to finish. The best racing game ever made gets even better.

Yb2gRWX

Hacknet: Labyrinths -- Hacknet is a criminally underrated game, and Labyrinths takes the two most affecting moments from the base game, and does them again in a unique and brain-shattering way. It doubles down on its heaviest messages and the impact is enormous. My heart is racing thinking about how much this DLC made my heart race. Yeah.

The Giant Bomb Categories, But Mine Part I

Best Shopkeeper: Emil (NieR: Automata), Falcon Ron (Pyre), Strange Resistance Woman (NieR: Automata)

Falcon Ron is such a helpful, goofy dude. He's annoying in the best way and he's always around to help me on my journey. It feels like he wants to help me. I dig it. Strange Resistance Woman is so meta and so good, while the top option is something that contributes to one of my favorite moments in gaming of all time.

Most Disappointing Game: Mass Effect: Andromeda, Destiny 2, Splatoon 2

Mass Effect: Andromeda has a completely unlikable main character, so even without all of the issues with stories untold, terrible animation and massive glitches, I just don't care about Ryder or their mission. But what makes it so disappointing is that this killed Mass Effect. Destiny 2 is more of the same. It feels so good to play. But they bungled so much with how I want to play that game, and also keep lying to the community. Splatoon 2 is a blast to play, I love every second I'm in a match, but I hate the way the multiplayer works. It's a chore to get a group together. I don't like playing the same map five times in a row. I shouldn't have to wonder if I can play with my friends or not. Not in a game like that.

Best-Looking Game: Horizon: Zero Dawn, Pyre, Forza Motorsport 7

Horizon: Zero Dawn is breathtaking in its beauty, especially in 4K.

Best Styyyyyle: Cuphead, Kingsway, Nidhogg 2

I look at the "Styyyle" award as something more akin to aesthetic, and in that area, Cuphead is unmatched. I don't think there is a more fully-realized aesthetic in any game ever. Kingsway is dope, kind of a trip with how dope it is. Those who dislike Nidhogg 2s art style are bad people who shouldnt be allowed to have opinions.

Best Multiplayer: Nidhogg 2, PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS, Cuphead

There are few things as exciting as a one-on-one match of Nidhogg 2. Its very well-balanced, and it gets my heart racing pretty good. I am intensely competitive in games, and Nidhogg really does it for me. PUBG is a great game to play with friends. It makes people who dont generally play tactically in shooters to actually do it. That said, the community as a whole is a dumpster fire and the game gets worse and worse to play as they develop it and hackers continue to ruin it. Cuphead couch co-op is deceptively awesome. Its something that a lot of people will overlook, but the parry system used to revive is awesome.

The Games I Played And Want To Play More Of

Hollow Knight
Little Nightmares
Kingsway
The Sexy Brutale
Super Mario Odyssey
The Surge
Mario + Rabbidds Kingdom Battle
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Gravity Rush 2
Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice
The End is Nigh
20XX
Absolver
A Hat In Time

God, what a list of games Ive touched but didnt beat. Theres an entire game of the year list right there. We have one of the most charming, celebratory platformers ever made in Super Mario Odyssey, which I put down due to the terrible motion controls but will eventually pick back up. A Hat in Time is another 3D platformer that I waited years for, but ultimately didnt have enough time to play once it came out. Hollow Knight, Little Nightmares, The Sexy Brutale and Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice are all deeply interesting games with a lot to say, I just have to make the time to hear what it is. I think the middle two are the most overlooked around here, and it would be a mistake to do so.

The Surge is something special, and something that I hope people give a chance to. Its from the developers of Lords of the Fallen, a Souls-like that falls short in every area where Dark Souls succeeds. The Surge corrects these problems and creates a deeply compelling world and style to roll with. Its Dark Souls, but future robot Dark Souls, and it has a DLC set in a massive derelict theme park. So cool. I need to play more.

Kingsway is a classic RPG played in a virtual early Windows desktop. Its dope. 20XX is Mighty Number 9, but done right. Absolver is a really neat take on martial combat and online competition, but something that I need to sink significant time into and focus only on it to give it the props it needs.

Zelda, for me, was ruined by playing it at the same time as Horizon: Zero Dawn, a game that I love and enjoyed playing far more than the early hours of Zelda. I hate Zeldas inventory system with such a passion that I havent went back. But like Mario, I need to suck it up and play it.

15. Disc Jam

tLf2THw
http://store.steampowered.com/app/415880/Disc_Jam/

This game eventually went in a direction development-wise that I didnt like -- a lack of overall content and the addition of microtransactions bums me out, but Ive still played well over 100 hours of this game. Its behind-the-back Windjammers, and the gameplay is so tight and well-tuned that I still love playing it. The community is just big enough to keep a multiplayer game alive. I dont know where the devs are going from here, but there is nothing like destroying somebody in this game. Making people quit out in Disc Jam is like sex.

14. Songbringer

79KsTqk
http://store.steampowered.com/app/367080/Songbringer/

Songbringer is a Zelda 1-inspired game with procedurally generated worlds that always have the same upgrades and progression, but on a different map with differrently-laid out dungeons. Its also got rad pixel art. These kinds of games are a dime a dozen, and Songbringer was originally a game that I planned on picking up maybe a year down the line. But there was a price mistake so I bought it on Steam and its a trip. Its way more trippy and surreal than I thought it would be. Its still very obtuse, but its kind of a ridiculous ride. I played through it all while stoned out of my mind at a cabin in the woods, and I loved every second of exploration.

13. Middle Earth: Shadow of War

FChhzsJ
http://store.steampowered.com/app/356190/Middleearth_Shadow_of_War/

I was ready to play more Shadow of Mordor, and thats what Shadow of War is. I simply love the gameplay loop of those games, and everything about the nemesis system is still a joy. Unlike Shadow of Mordor, however, I dont care about the story of Shadow of War at all, and find the boss fights -- especially the Nazgul -- to be a chore. The back half of the game is a slog, a grindfest I hated to get to the end that was unfulfilling. But God damn I love killing orcs and dominating them and recruiting captains and everything else. It feels great to play, and the story is JUST good enough ot keep me interested for the first 20 hours. I 100%d this game and I feel stupid for it, but at least I was blazed out of my mind for the final 20 hours.
