I think it's pretty much because they're trying to recoup the costs of having agreements with Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime/whatever other service they're offering along with the cost of maintaining their servers and stuff.

I assume their massive servers cost quite a bit of money to maintain, along with their partnerships with services like Netflix, and game discounts. I honestly don't know how Nintendo was able to keep the Wii U alive without paid service.

All the amiibos people keep buying probably add up to quite a bit of those costs

The free PS3 online was paid by the developers, Sony had a fee based on how much data your content was downloaded.
Which resulted in the death of demos.

I remember doing those Net Zero hacks on Dreamcast to play online to avoid paying for it, so a paid online service on consoles is hardly a new thing.

Force every console to be online.
Oh shit guys it costs a lot YOU have to pay.
Yep sounds like typical businesses allowed to do whatever they want.

You can play XBLG on PC without a subscription if you want proof. They actually tried to make PC players pay before when they were doing GFWL but that shit flopped harder than Goldeen in Smash Bros.

Goldeen in Smash Bros

It would have been better if they had just had Magikarp be the useless pokemon that flops around, BUT, if someone gets KO'd while Magikarp is out, it evolves into Gyarados and starts wrecking the nearest player.

Supposedly the rumor is that it was originally Magikarp but they changed it to Goldeen halfway through development to make it a reference to the Anime.

Imagine believing the server cost myth when there are tens, If not hundreds, of millions of online gamers who never had to fork out a dime specifically for server upkeep.

I'm surprised some mmos still get away with it.

And the whole Xbox Live infrastructure is still being paid by Gold members, even if it is free for PC and Silver members.
