Does that apply to tourists who have plastic bags with them? Seems harsh.

Yes. Being caught with a plastic bag in Montreal is like being caught with meth in Saudi Arabia, or with a American flag in San Francisco.

They made it so grocery stores can't give out plastic bags here in Hawaii :<

But they can still sell them in the store. It's so sad...People were all like "Hooray! We got the plastic bag ban!". And then the next day they're like "Why do we have to use these crappy paper bags at Foodland?! Why do I have to pay for plastic bags?!"

According to Stephan Pastis (California resident and the author of the comic strip Pearls Before Swine) something similar happened there. Polls showed the majority wanting companies to put if foods were GMOs, but when it came time to vote, they voted against it lol.

Having people pay for plastic bag was the first step in Montreal many years ago.

Now you can't pay for them at all. They're just illegal to sell.

Sounds like typical liberals. Too myopic to realize the consequences of their positions. The obvious place to go from there is to play the victim. "Hey, this isn't fair! We shouldn't have to use these crappy paper bags! The corporations are oppressing us!"

i have a huge stockpile of them, i have to carry a few sometimes because the cashier doesn't double bag heavy stuff (more risk of rupture on the way home) if i see only one i just grab a bag and use the additional one to carry it back.

Also a lot of foreign restaurants like Chinese takeouts still use plastic bags in plastic bagged banned cities.

This. They banned plastic bags in my city but I have dozens of hoarded ones to reuse, so I'll bring them with me and reuse them. Fuck paper bags. They don't have handles generally. A bag without handles is completely useless to me because I'm not fucking carrying that shit from underneath for up to a mile. Handles are required. Non-handled bags can go straight into the trash.

Also sketchy convenience stores typically run by immigrants. The same sort of places where the freezer was set to like 55 degrees F and everything in it was clearly fucked and inedible but I didn't say anything because if they get shut down, it's their own damn fault.

Why not just buy one of those large reusable bags for a dollar and keep it in your car?

the ability to reuse them. we do this here. the goal is limit the number of plastic bags in the trash. the single use bags are flimsy and can't really be re-used that many times so they end up in land fills and trash dumps. the reusable ones are a bit stronger and more durable. you have to pay for them (usually 10 cents a bag) and they're designed to be brought back to the store on your next trip to reuse. keeps them from getting thrown out as much.

oh, so it's like a matter of durability. I've always used the plastic bags from groceries for like, putting in garbage bins in the house to collect garbage in so that you can tie them up more easily but I dunno if these are the resuable kind or not

if safeway charged a reasonable price for a reusable bag i would definitely use one, they want 4$ for one. fred meyer has em for 2$ for the exact same thing.

Interesting since paper bags are actually much more resource intensive to make and recycle.

Littering is the bigger issue with plastic bags, but that could be combated with harsher littering laws. I don't think this is the right direction to be going.
