Everything here had a wide release in 2017 though some had limited releases or were released in another country in 2016.

1. Get Out
2. Wind River
3. Gifted
4. Logan Lucky
5. The Disaster Artist
6. The Glass Castle
7. Dunkirk
8. Baby Driver
9. Logan
10. Bladerunner 2049
11. Battle of the Sexes
12. The Florida Project
13. The Big Sick
14. Patriot's Day
15. Daddy's Home 2
16. The Book of Henry
17. Lost City of Z
18. The Founder
19. Sleight
20. The Lego Batman Movie
21. Live By Night
22. Born in China
23. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
24. Ghost in the Shell
25. Atomic Blonde
26. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
27. Murder on the Orient Express
28. The Hitman's Bodyguard
29. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
30. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

I would say that everything from Valerian and above I enjoyed my time (not necessarily were good movies). The other four movies were just pointless.

Here are my rankings of 2017 films that I haven't seen yet but plan to see in order of how much I want to watch it

1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (totally planning on seeing this tomorrow)
2. The Meyerowitz Stories
3. Last Flag Flying
4. Brad's Status
5. Colossal
6. Thank You For Your Service (I originally had no intention of seeing this until word of mouth)
7. Coco
8. Wonderstruck
9. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
10. Downsizing
11. The Mummy (I nearly went on three separate occasions and never pulled the trigger)

1. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
2. Logan
3. Valerian
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Cars 3
6. Despicable Me 3

I need to watch more movies.

(none of them were outright bad)

Saw Star Wars, Logan, and DM3 in theaters, which is the most movies I've seen in theaters in a calendar year since 2012. Waited for Redbox/Netflix for the others. I wish I had seen Valerian in theaters because the visuals were phenomenal (and by far the best part of the film).

Outside of Yondu's arc, everything else fell flat on its face. Eventually, I just flat out didn't give a shit what was happening on the screen if Yondu wasn't involved. I was going to give the stale, formulaic comic book hero movie one last chance to see if I was going to drop them altogether or not. I chose GotG 2 over Wonder Woman, and I haven't seen a Marvel or DC Comics movie since.

If I got to decide who Best Actor/Actress and Supporting Actor/Actress at the Oscars, here's what I would do:

Best Actor - This was a tough one for me. Shoutout to Steve Carrell as Bobby Riggs (Battle of the Sexes), but it was ultimately a two man race. James Franco as Tommy Wiseau (The Disaster Artist) and Woody Harrelson as Rex Walls (The Glass Castle). Franco had the more attention-grabbing performance, but Harrelson's performance resonated with me the most due to parallels between his character and someone important to me in real life. I know that makes me biased, but I'm giving it to Harrelson

Best Actress - The fact that nobody jumps out to me is a shame. My initial thought was Mckenna Grace as Mary Addler (Gifted). Her portrayal as a child genius was probably the most grounded and believable that I have ever seen (child geniuses that is). My focus also shifted to the last two winners of Best Actress, Emma Stone and Brie Larson. Larson was overshadowed by Harrelson and the actress who played her younger character in The Glass Castle, but she was still great. Emma didn't have a melodramatic role as tennis legend Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes, but her role had great range, and she nailed it all. Neither of those performances truly moved me though. Grace wins with relative ease.

Best Supporting Actor - Easily the most stacked of the four groups (as is usually the case year in and year out), I had a hard time whittling them down. I kind of veer towards those that have at least a sprinkle of humor, so even those with no chance in hell at the Oscars (such as LilRel Howery in Get Out) made the initial cut. Hell, Ray Romano in the Big Sick was in play! Ultimately, I got it down to two: Daniel Craig as Joe Bang (Logan Lucky) and Willem Dafoe as Bobby (The Florida Project). Both had commanding presences for different reasons. Dafoe as a genuine and exhausted manager of a motel and Craig as a slightly eccentric demolition expert were close to perfect. Craig reminds me a little bit of Thomas Jane. Both are really great actors when given roles with excitable personalities, but given their physique and ability to pull off an intimidating, stoic expression, they don't exactly get a lot of those roles. Because of Craig getting the role I always dreamed of him performing, I'm giving the award to him.

Best Supporting Actress - This can be a huge dumpster fire. Supporting roles for women can be downright abysmal with a seemingly large amount of them able to be described as wife/girlfriend/mom who worries a lot and cries and maybe even in a damsel in distress. For a good six months or so, I just assumed that it was going to Lindsay Duncan as Evelyn Adler (Gifted). It wasn't because her role and performance were that amazing. It was just that her competition was mediocre at best. Two days after Thanksgiving though, I finally found someone who bested her. Bria Vinaite as the Halley (Florida Project) was definitely something. She's the kind of person that I could never see myself wanting to be involved with in any capacity. More importantly, she's the kind of person that I would dismiss in general. She's neither a good person nor a good mother and doesn't exactly make a concerted effort to improve herself or her situation, but by the movie's end, I had considerably more respect for her than I did in the early going. I don't think the script had a profound effect on that. I think that it was mostly Vinaite who made Halley. Not bad for an actress making her film debut (if IMDB is correct).

That being said, I don't really understand the Academy's definition of Best vs Supporting acting categories since Steve Carrell was up for Best Actor in Foxcatcher despite being the third-leading man. Vinaite likely has no chance of being nominated, but the way her character is utilized in The Florida Project, she might be more likely as a Best Actress than Supporting Actress despite being the second-leading lady.

Studios or actors actually choose which category they want to submit actors. The Academy doesn't!

I'm quite a ways behind the ball:

1) It
2) Baby Driver
3) Get Out
4) Star Wars: Last Jedi
5) Guardian of the Galaxy: Vol 2
6) Justice League
7) Despicable Me 3
8) Rings

Ones I need to see that are probably better than most of those:
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Mother!
Disaster Artist
Shape of Water
Coco
It Comes At Night
Lady Bird
Call Me by Your Name

just wait until you see Three Billboards

also I fucking loved Dafoe as Bobby. His roles are always so bizarre and extreme so to see him play someone so down to earth and still have that same level of charisma was really impressive
