Last night, the whitest white dude answered "Gangster's Paradise", got it right, and then like 4 minutes later Alex Trebek said the judges have overturned his answer and deducted like $1200 from his score because he said "gangster" instead of "gangsta".

Guy ended up winning the entire game later but still, lol.

This reminds me of something similar a while ago here. There was a game show called catch phrase and the host was a senile old idiot. One answer in particular was "boogeyman", but when the woman answered that he said it was wrong, as the answer according to him was "bogeyman".

Show was pulled shortly after due to the backlash.

I rarely watch Jeopardy anymore because stuff like that happens CONSTANTLY these days, and it's made it no fun to watch. It feels like the show is just an exercise to see how anal the judges can be.

(It's even worse when they don't catch it right away, and then a few minutes later they're like "hey, remember that response you gave? We decided it's wrong all of a sudden, so we're taking your money away.")

Yeah that's exactly what they did this time lol. They announced it a few minutes later right as another contestant got a daily double.
Trebek was like "Now I was just about to say you can take the lead with this daily double BUT the judges have just notified that (dude)'s answer from previously, was incorrect! You answered "Gangster's Paradise" but the answer was "gangSTAs Paradise".

His actual answer was "Gangster's paradise lost" though, which isn't the name of the song, even if you forgive the mispronunciation.

Yea but Jeopardy has always been very strict with answers. Having the right answer inside a larger wrong answer isn't usually grounds to give the person credit.

Think of it like this.

Imagine the title was actually "Gangster etc." and a black man said "Gangsta etc." out of habit. It would have been pegged as racist for making fun of the way he spoke.

The category was before and after. The correct response was a mashup of Gangtas Paradise and Paradise Lost.

Forgiving the mispronunciation of "Gangsta", his complete answer of "Gangster's Paradise Lost" was correct because the purpose of the category was to mix two names together. The clue called for him to mix Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" with John Milton's "Paradise Lost".

Thats would explain.....why it was overturned.

What do you mean? It would have been overturned regardless due to his pronunciation of "Gangsta"

The problem I have with it and stuff like the the "mythological hero Achilles" is that it seems arbitrary some many words have multiple ways of being pronounced (some more subjective than others). If you're gonna count technically incorrect pronunciations as completely wrong answers, whats to stop them from saying "hot caw-fee" is wrong if they were looking for it to be provided "hot caw-fee."

Plus like, it's a whole other can of worms when you consider if someone has a foreign accent that makes it difficult to pronounce certain sounds.
