-A fatal security flaw has been exposed in Intel processors

-Intel took shortcuts and sacrificed security for speed for decades

-Windows/Mac/Linux will soon roll out updates that will fix the security flaw, but will impact performance by upwards of 30%

-Intel's CEO has sold a massive chunk of his private stock in preparation for the ass ******* Intel will receive when this situation becomes known to the mainstream

Theres small screwups and big screwups. Here is tremendously huge screwup: Virtually all Intel processors produced in the last decade have a major security hole that could allow normal user programsfrom database applications to JavaScript in web browsersto discern to some extent the layout or contents of protected kernel memory areas, the Register reported on Tuesday.
Essentially, modern Intel processors have a design flaw that could allow malicious programs to read protected areas of a devices kernel memory (memory dedicated to the most essential core components of an operating system and their interactions with system hardware). This flaw could potentially expose protected information like passwords. Since the error is baked into the Intel x86-64 hardware, it requires an OS-level overwrite to patchon every major operating system, including Windows, Linux, and macOS.

The exact details of the design flaw and to what extent users are vulnerable are being kept under wraps for now, per the Register, though since developers appear to be rushing towards patching systems in coming weeks it is likely very bad. In the absolute worst-case speculative scenario, something as simple as JavaScript running on a webpage or cloud-hosted malware could gain access to some of the most sensitive inner workings of an Intel-based device.

Because the fix entails severing kernel memory entirely from user processes, patched OSes could potentially see a massive performance hit of five to 30 percent slowdown, depending on the task and processor model:

sidenote: buy AMD stock as quick as possible before this breaks out into major networks. AMD is up 7% since yesterday and the news barely broke.

If my laptop cpu gets 30% slower, i demand that Intel buys me new laptop, because this would get slow as fuck.

Anyways, i heard that it shouldn't affect nomal customers all that much but affect Google, amazon etc. who uses intel cpu in their stuff.

Bruh, the benchmarks are terrible.

What the fuck, I just bought an Intel processor and mobo. Should I take them back?

I bought an i7 6700k in October 2016. I'm screwed, too.

They're still in their boxes. I could easily return them to the store and swap them out for Ryzen components.

As you should.

My current computer has an AMD processor, so it's already much more than 30% slower

(honestly, some days this piece of shit makes a C64 look speedy)

I'm still on an i5 2500k that I've been using since 2011, I believe. I was planning on upgrading recently but I'm glad I didn't.

I actually do have some AMD stock (not a lot, maybe like 40-50 shares).

Even still.

You purchased a product under the knowledge that they would perform at or near a certain point.

30% isn't a minor decrease, that's a huge decrease. Especially for those who OC and purchased high end chips.

I was just about to build a new PC and go Intel again.

Maybe I'll switch it up and go AMD since it's going to only be for gaming anyways...

So it doesn't really affect everyday consumer tasks?

I'm worried about tasks that are actually CPU intensive. CS:GO isn't exaclty the craziest benchmark.

Planet Coaster already barely runs, and Fruity Loops can have trouble when a lot of plugins are being used in a song. Rendering video can take ages. If that shit gets significanily slower then this fucking blows.

Yeah, I'm sure that eliminating the motivation of profits and/or establishing a government office to produce CPUs would result better, less expensive and more readily available CPUs.

This is will be a massive blow to Intel. This will shake the entire industry because it will cost to correct the performance loss, which will put downwards pressure on other industries and the economy.
