A story-heavy western game is a pretty safe bet for GOTY. God of War seems to be going that direction. There's Red Dead 2, if that comes out this year. Spider-Man might be a darkhorse if it's any good.

The Last of Us Part 2 is coming out next year.

I'm not sure what metric you're going by, but I don't think this is true. After Zelda, Mario, and Horizon, there's only scattered support for games like Nier, Divinity, PUBG, and P5.

I don't see GoW having a chance. That series is pretty well done here. TLoU2 will be bringing it when it comes out though if it's as well-received as the original.

I'd accept SMO and P5 being #1 contenders or even favorites in certain years...not really sold on H:ZD hitting that same mark as well unless you're thinking 2009 against Modern Warfare 2 or 2012 against Borderlands 2. Most other GotY-winners are just too strong.

I think that Nier, Persona 5, and PUBG could have beaten out TLOU2 in 2018. Cuphead would be the indie darling pick that some places go for. Divinity would definitely sweep the PC-centric sites. God of War I don't think belongs in the same discussion unless it ends up way better than expected.

That seems unlikely to me. The Last of Us was critical gold. Part 2 would have to be pretty off-kilter not to get more press love than those games, especially P5 and Nier, IMO.

Oh, I know they did very well for themselves. I just have a difficult time -- in a vacuum, of course -- picturing TLoU2 not being the BotW of its playing field against that pack.

TLOU2 would probably win but I don't think it's going to be close to Breath of the Wild level. BotW level is like...Skyrim level. A game that has become something of a cultural event. Naughty Dog has an excellent GotY track record, but even at their best they aren't invincible, and they're not infallible either. Uncharted 3 both disappointed expectations and got wrecked in awards when it came out.

It originally lost to The Last of Us, but then it barely beat it in a follow-up poll that deserved a final one-on-one poll yet didn't get it. It also barely beat Pokemon X/Y to get there.

Not that LoZ:LBW doesn't deserve it -- it''s super good! Still, it's the most controversial GotY-winner due to how close its wins are and TLoU not getting a fair shot to break its tie against it.

I agree, but I'm not ready to fully guarantee that. We were going to either have our first handheld be GotY or our first new IP be GotY, and that's an interesting balance we didn't get to see one-on-one. Still, yeah, LoZ:LBW feels safer.
