It is in human nature to deify yourself and think that the beliefs you hold are self righteous and just. When, for example, your favorite team is winning, a sense of pride grows and self worth is inflated. There is a feeling of belonging with other fans and you feel vindicated for your support. This can be applied to all aspects that someone feels attached to or considers part of their identity. This leads to the us vs. them mentality and you begin to see the other side as your enemy.
Now, for the topic of discussion, progressivists tend to have little socioeconomic status. They see the rich as corrupt and brand them an enemy. To progressivists, the rich are not people, they are just an entity that serves to keep the poor broke and uneducated to further their own greed. This is why progressivists push for socialism, universal healthcare, and illegal immigration. They support these not because of altruism and the love of the common man, but rather they brand themselves as these things to fulfill their own narcissistic desires. When San Fran becomes a safe haven for illegals, when diversity is forced, when LGBT rights increase, the progressivist gains a sense of satisfaction, not because they are happy for those people, but because they are happen that the enemy has failed. This has become increasingly evident as Trumps presidency unfolds, through constant referrals to Trump as Cheeto-in-chief and the orange turd. When Trump succeeds, they do not admit that he did a good job, they merely deflect and state one of the other gripes they have with him or they give some snide backhanded complement. They cannot allow Trump to do well because that is letting the enemy, or the rival team, to win.

I have no dog in this race, and am also high as hell, but let me contribute some thoughts after reading.

The societal differences in the two party conundrum is not based inherently on either progressivism or narcissism. It's ignorance. Anyone I know that is heavily political has retreated into the walled garden of the societal views that their clique has deemed correct through lionizing forum posts, rallies, talking heads or journalist articles. In their bubble, they photosynthesize the same opinions showering them and shit it back out. It's a gigantic game of telephone. Everyone wants to view the big picture like they're the first to do so, whether it's the environment or economy -- two meta terms that they haven't the faintest about, except that penguins are warm and their payrate is like $9 hourly. They are all convinced they alone have the right ideas, and the only barrier between them and a sense of accomplishment in their world is that they need to banter the shit out of random people at the bar at 2am about it.
