Google apologized, announced it was working on long-term fixes. But according to some tests conducted by WIRED, that long-term fix is still forthcoming. For now, Google Photos just plays at being blind. Inside Google Photos, a baboon is a baboon, but a monkey is not a monkey, writes senior business reporter Tom Simonite. Gorillas and chimpanzees are invisible. Even two years later, the tech giant still cant trust its algorithm to not seem like a racist jerk.

Why is technology so racist? First Kinect couldn't recognize black people, then smart cameras kept thinking that asian people were blinking in the photo, now this

BTW, Google's fix for this was simply removing "gorilla" from the terms its image search can use:

Humans are great apes. Some times, computers are going to be wrong in recognition software.
Yes, racism is bad, yes, dehumanization is bad, but can we get to a place where we treat this objectively how an alien might or literally in this case, a computer does, and not become so fucking emotional about it?

I know, it's easy for someone to say when their race doesn't have the history or they personally haven't been subjected to that level of prejudice. But are we forever hamstrung by history?

I actually read a fairly interesting article about how photography as a field does have an unintentional racial bias, because back in the early days of film they just flat out didn't bother to test it on people who weren't white. All early film development techniques were created around the premise of exclusively shooting white people. So theres still a little bit of that legacy alive, although its better than it used to be.

Actually this is essentially true. If the algorithm had the "TRUE full array and variety of facial human features present in different ethnic groups" it would be able to classify correctly.

You don't get it, black people are darker, it's literally harder to pick up detail. This is a technical issue. You need the right dynamic range, especially in low light conditions.

Yes, the entire field of optics and photography was developed with white people in mind . . . nothing to do with a new era of knowledge transfer the likes of which not seen since the printing press.

Or you know, evil whites developing evil white technology for selfies years into the future! Damn them!

I don't even understand what you are arguing Anarchy_Jubilex. Most of the companies that produced commercial grade film tested and optimized their film for presenting people (and in this case that was mostly white people) on screen, so many movies were shot on film that did not give the same dynamic range to African Americans.
