Due to space. Why would anyone ever pay to check a bag then? Literally they just do it for free at the gate.

Because the only luggage you get to check in for free is carry-on. If it's anything else you would have to check it before hand either way.

I always thought this was pretty dumb, because if I put something in my carry-on it's specifically because I want to carry it with me. If i wanted to check it, I would not be carrying it onto the plane with me.

Yes you would be, because the guy will ask you if you want to check it for free.

Because the plane overhead bin is too small, or is full, so you have no choice.

Every time I've seen this, they do it as people are boarding so it's not a matter of it already being full. It's definitely a matter of there not being enough space in the first place, which is honestly bullshit.

But the way my local airport does it is that one of the people at the gate puts a tag on your bag, and once you get to the plane the flight attendants take the tagged bags. There's no communication beyond that, so I take the tag off. Easy peasy.
