My co-worker quit a few weeks ago and wasn't replaced. They gave me all of her responsibilities. We had downsized a few months prior to that, so essentially I am now doing the work that 5 different people used to handle a year ago. This new woman they hired on the sales side has added on much more work to my pile. All of these important databases that I am now responsible for have incorrect information, it would take weeks alone to update the thousands of entries, but they are getting annoyed with me as if it was my fault, as well as getting annoyed at me for not immediately being an expert in everything else that was handled by prior people.

On top of that, I was already months behind in work since I always have to stop the main tasks to work on more important things.

And they want me to do this all for $40,000 (no raise), which is $10,000 less than the co-worker who quit was getting who wasn't even doing half of the things I am doing.

When you left a job, did you help recruit and train the next person?

Yes, and I even recommended my replacement, whom they hired.

Nah, there wasnt anyone to train when I left my old job. I might have seen six people hired after me in those fourteen months, and none of them lasted because no one wants to work graveyard shifts if something better comes along.

Why don't you ask for a raise?

"Boss, I've been doing a lot more work and I have a lot more responsibilities now. I've been doing a good job. Can I please have a 20k raise?"

If they want to keep you they'll give you a nice raise.

Sounds like you have a bit of leverage here. Why not lay all this out slightly more professionally to your boss and if they won'r budge on workload/salary then decide what to do. Btw, working a job like that sucks, but not having enough money to pay the bills sucks even more. JustMyOpinion.

Fortunately, I live at home and I have over $60,000 saved up so I should be fine for a while. That's why I'd rather quit. I feel like it is time to move on anyway, I've been here about 9 years.

Do this. Be completely polite and professional, but make it clear that you're not a pushover.

So, unless you have a savings set up specifically to hold you over during a job hunt, I would never recommend quitting a job without an offer from someone else. Unemployement is not great and can sometimes go on for longer than you anticipate, so even if your job sucks. I'd try to put up with it while hunting for something better.

I would recommend that you talk to your boss about getting a raise. If your really are doing the responsibilities of 5 people then you are saving the company quite a bit of money and you should get to see some of that reflected on your pay. If the person you replaced made $10k more than you for less work, ask for $15 or $20k. They'll probably haggle you down, but you'll end up in a better spot.

I've only ever quit one job before and Peter Gibbons would Have been proud.

I didn't have any intentions of quitting but halfway through a produce shift at a local grocer I realized I hated my job and wasn't being compensated appropriately. The week prior was my one year review and I ended up getting a 7 cent raise after learning how to work in three departments plus cashiering. Once the epiphany hit me I quit loading up the cart in the cooler and started to snack on some Honeycrisp apples. My boss found me and started freaking out demanding I get on the floor. I remember word for word telling him, "I don't feel like working anymore today. I don;t think i'm coming in tomorrow either" and walked out.

I don't know what got into me that day and I feel bad for putting my coworkers through the extra work but I don;t regret the decision.

$20,000 raise isn't enough. Past employees doing even one of these responsibilities were making $55,000+. It would have to be $80,000+ salary for me to even consider staying, but they would never go for that.

I can agree that it can take long to find another job, but my savings should be able to hold me for several years in a worse case scenario. I shouldn't be spending any more than $6,000 per year and I have over 10 times that saved up.

I also plan to start selling artworks in the near future. I have enough reference photos to make about 700 drawings or paintings.

imo

you should try to leverage much higher pay while searching for a new, better job

if you get one before they get back to you, or you before you ask, you can see if they will match it

if you're decided on leaving, you def have enough money saved up to find a job and move out or opposite
