This is America. Just about anything weapons-related is legal if you pay the right people, taxes and permits.

When I lived there the locals said it was pretty much the remaining wild west.

It was funny walking into the PX on base and them just having a Barrett .50 on sale for anyone to buy.

The first firearm I ever bought was at a sporting goods store in Anchorage, I cant remember which store it was.

You can out some propane in a Super Soaker, put a flame in front of the nozzle, and then you'll have your own flamethrower.

You can't own any automatic or burstfire weapons produced after May 19, 1986. Also, you cannot own anything like an RPG unless it is decommissioned for museum or collecting purposes.

But flamethrowers are generally legal, depending on the city/state. You can't get the Dragon's Breath flame thrower shotgun shell in Florida because of dry spell conditions and fire hazard. But it isn't federally illegal, and a lot of states sell them.

You would very likely get hurt or killed because there's no safety choke/design to extinguish the fire when you come off the trigger, and the fire would go straight back into your container and burst. Unless, I guess, there was a big enough gap.

I don't know. I'm not going to try it. lol

I dont know every state, but from a federal standpoint full-auto weapons arent illegal. I think you just have to file paperwork with the ATF and pay the appropriate fees.

You are incorrect, friend. All burst and automatic firearms produced after May 19, 1986 are completely illegal and 100% impossible to own as a civilian, legally. You can get a Class 3 Tax Stamp with serious paperwork and background checks for a fully automatic or burst fire weapon produced before May 19, 1986. No one in the entire country can own one produced after, as a civilian.

https://www.historyandheadlines.com/may-19-1986-firearm-owners-protection-act-signed-president-reagan/

"Much to the chagrin of gun enthusiasts, another provision of the FOPA banned the sale of newly manufactured machine guns (full automatic capable weapons) to private citizens. Automatic weapons built before May 19, 1986 would still be allowed to be owned and sold (transferred in gun law lingo) to private citizens as long as regulations about recording the transfer, paying a special $200 tax, and having the transfer approved by local and federal authorities. Another requirement of this section of the Act was that the transferor and transferee must reside in the same state."

I should point out that U.S. law incorrectly refers to any weapon of a faster firing speed than semi-automatic as a "machine gun", which is completely false. But when dealing with the BATF you have to go by their rules. A machine gun is different from an assault rifle, which is different from a battle rifle, etc..

But legally they are all grouped as "machine gun" as long as it fires more than 1 round per trigger pull.

Does that surprise you? Flamethrowers are significantly less dangerous than pretty much anything you guys can buy in a gun store.

Guns and projectile weapons in general are usually only heavily restricted in the U.S. in heavily liberal cities like New York and California.

Everywhere else they're perfectly legal.

You are correct. Except burst/automatic weapons. You can buy any semi-automatic or slower action weapon at a store, in most cities.

Let us analyse for a moment, at this critical juncture, some of the specifics regarding flamethrowers.

Flamethrowers are relatively large weapons, roughly equivalent in size to a large rifle. A full tank of ammunition, equivalent to roughly 10 seconds of fire, typically weighs upwards of 50 pounds. Their maximum range is roughly 80 metres (though good luck hitting anything that isn't stationary at that range). Also, in addition to being extremely heavy and short-ranged for their size, they are also a weapon that it is almost impossible to take cover while using.

All in all, flamethrowers have a well-earned reputation for being relatively ineffective when it comes to actually killing something. They're good for clearing out dense foliage and not much else (and even then, there are far better options for that these days). During Operation Commando in the Korean War, out of 97 flamethrowers sent out 65 of them were either lost or abandoned by their operators.

About the only way a flamethrower is more dangerous than even a small handgun is in its propensity to light your surroundings on fire. In terms of actually damaging a target, you're better off with a gun.
