Yes, expecting a channel about history to play a program about MLK on MLK Day is a ridiculous request.

Though the bigger issue is that it's the History Channel in name only at this point, so...

The History channel is proof that literally every network had to get more "extreme" in order to get better ratings (like how CNN talks about click bait now).

To be fair, the old nickname for the History Channel was "The Hitler Channel" due to how many documentaries on Hitler, the Nazis, and WW2 they would air.

Even back then, I always got the sense their demographic were the type that bought and sold nazi military paraphernalia for "historical reasons".

It's nothing to do with racism, it just has to do with how fucking awful the history channel is

Seriously. American Pickers is one of the worst shows with two of the most insufferable assholes in television. I met the lanky front runner of that show and he said fuck every other word. Like his vocabulary was that of a high school sophomore. Completely unlikable in person and reeked of sleazy undertones.

First thing to do before ever reposting or reacting to a post on Reddit is to confirm that it's actually true. Well, in this case it's largely accurate, the History Channel did have an American Pickers marathon yesterday. What's conveniently omitted is that they also had a 2-hour program about the history of the civil rights movement before that marathon called "Stories from the Road to Freedom:"

https://www.history.com/schedule?month=1&day=15&year=2018

A full day of MLK content would have either cost a lot of money to produce of would have entailed paying royalties, both of which are probably a waste given how few people were watching TV during the day on a Monday. A 2-hour retrospective and a day of reruns seems fine to me.

Which makes total sense, since they don't have to pay royalties to the people on the reality shows. Airing almost anything else has a cost.

"Extreme"?
Nah. They've just gotten a bunch of reality shows that are cheap to make, and be rerun indefinitely. Just like pretty much any other cable channel anymore.

Reality shows are easily the most cost-effective TV for mid-range networks like History Channel to air. Low production costs, typically little/no cost for talent, no royalties, and they can be aired indefinitely.

They mention that it was his favorite show. Doesn't matter anyway, tv has gotten terrible. CN shows like 6 hours of teen titans go, and you have other channels that used to be educational but now it's reality bunk.
