the long story short is that the GOP and Democrats are both probably divided

they did think they had the votes, by placing CHIP in the package (even though there is less military funding than some GOP members want, and no DACA deal, which many but not all Dems insist on)

then this happened: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/18/government-shutdown-2018-trump-republicans-345532

I know it'll never happen but there needs to be a way to set term limits for Congressmen because all we get is a bunch of career politicians that don't give on shit about the country or the people they're serving and instead are subservient to the lobbyists and big corporations. Maybe then we'll get less shutdowns and Congress actually getting something done for once.

I dunno, to me it seems just as likely that private lobbyist influence would become much larger with term limits, since they can just as easily buy a new politician as an old one, and they have more leverage over the new one due to their superior institutional knowledge

it also would just increase the number of former politicians who become lobbyists if anything

here's how you get less shutdowns:

remove the debt ceiling entirely

what the GOP is doing seems sure to backfire on them

they deserve whatever happens to them. CHIP should never have been collateral.

I guess it's two different things I want that aren't really connected. I don't think term limits will get rid of lobbying and could theoretically make it worse, but I don't trust this current congress to get anything done to limit the affect of lobbying. One can only dream.

no

i think the tea party wing wants the shutdown too, it makes them seem desirable in primaries in house districts where there is no real democratic opposition

Maybe it's just because I'm a cynical bastard, but I'm having a hard time seeing any actual consequences for the GOP come from this. Most people blamed them for the 2013 shutdown, and then they "punished" them by awarding them 9 Senate seats, 13 House seats, and a couple of governor's races the next year.

the method, they cannot

the proposed infrastructure plan is of pence's design and is the same sort of mass-privatization he put in place in IN

dems would rather let it wait and do it themselves after their next wave

when sweden and other countries spend more than they take in via taxes, government bonds are auctioned to cover the difference. because they can print their own money, the debt is considered very safe and has an interest rate that barely is above inflation.

when the united states spends more than they take in via taxes, they do the same, BUT, the US has a debt ceiling that limits the amount of bonds they can sell. not for any particular reason; it's not based on the cost of total payouts relative to our tax receipts or anything that would limit our ability to actually make the payments; just a big round number.

we're coming up to that big round number again. when we hit it, we either have to raise the debt ceiling, effectively admitting that we are stupid to have a ceiling, or shut down the government and only fund what we can with taxes, which means only 'critical' services such as our military.
