Money doesn't make you happy; it makes you happier.

Personal happiness is overrated anyway. That's the thing you learn as you progress in life, its not just about you.

Theres some figure floating around out there about how much money a household needs to make annually to live comfortably and its way less than what a rich/wealthy person makes. Not even in the same ballpark. Barely middle class tbh depending who you ask. But poor people can be happy too - usually they have to have their shit together with welfare/Medicaid/food stamps and section 8, but it is very possible. It does help if theyre healthy though...which is a huge deciding factor, in addition to how fulfilling your hobbies are etc.

Yeah it's the opposite. The older I get the more I realize I can only love others as much as I love myself. If I don't take care of myself, I'm in no position to take care of others. Altruism is as much about creating a world you want to live in as it is lending a hand to those who need it.

There is a fair bit of research that would say money does in fact buy happiness, but at a surprisingly low level ,(income of like 90k per year or something) the amount of happiness gained per dollar decreases dramatically

One got the f*** outta there and moved to Spain, and the other two are pretty much depressed about their situation.

yeah, anytime the subject comes up my wife gets close to tears and just all around feels crummy whenever any major news travels north
but as a whole separate from the situation? the whole family is one of the most joyful I know and all of their friends are constantly in happy moods

You don't just ask poor people questions but design a study in which you collect interviews from a bunch of people, assign their comments a scale, chart those answers on a frequency histogram and then look for correlations between interviewees money and their reported level of happiness. The point at which money stops mattering is surprisingly low.

Ugh most of these happiness surveys are a joke. Happiness is completely subjective, its different for pretty much everybody. For example if you come from nothing, a small amount will make you happy; if you come from extreme wealth then you will require that to be happy because you are used to that. There can't be a set dollar amount that's so god damn stupid, people are not robots lol
