On my commute, there are two improperly timed red lights. One is at a busy intersection and takes 10 minutes to get through the traffic if everyone is paying attention. The other is a less busy intersection. The left turn is set up so that only 4 cars can pass through at a time if everyone is paying attention. In many instances punctuality of the person in front of me can turn a 30 minute commute home into 40-44 mins. While I dont honk, it does no good, I do get frustrated.

There's a couple intersections that flip to a sensor trigger during rush hour, giving priority to the busier road. Problem is, the sensors don't work, so you can pull into the turn lane and sit there indefinitely, while also being unable to pull back into main traffic because people are blowing by you at 55 mph. It makes the shopping center right there impossible to get to because you'll never get a green light.

I start honking as soon as the light turns yellow.

If I'm turning right on red, and there's traffic turning into that same lane from the oncoming direction, I always wait for a clear opening regardless of whether I have my own lane to turn into. I've seen too many knuckleheads turn wide into the rightmost lane and almost cause an accident.

I got honked at the other day because I turned left at an intersection as it was going from yellow to red. The person who honked wasn't from oncoming traffic though, it came from a guy on my left waiting to go straight and I delayed him for a millisecond. Of course it was a truck asshole.

the best part was we just hit a red light at the next intersection, so the extra quarter of a second she'd have gained by me gunning it off the line was moot

it happens in northern VA all the time. people are always in a rush to get to their destination two seconds sooner

It happens plenty. A friend of mine did that and it frustrated me so much. I didn't say anything because he was giving me a 120 mile long ride home, but I was as annoyed as the people he was honking at.

Some time months later we talked about it, and he and some other guy were arguing that waiting a full second after the light turns green to honk was much too long. Not even 1 second.

It shouldn't take more than a second or two to figure out if cars approaching the intersection are going to run the light or not. Take significantly longer than that, and I'm honking because I figure you aren't even paying attention to the light to start with.

When the light turns green I wait about 5-10 seconds to make sure all traffic is stopped and that the intersection is clear of all traffic and that no one is about to run a red light. And when road is clear I safely proceed through the intersection.
When you are on the road it is not just your life you are responsible but your passengers and those you share the road with. I think a lot of people forget this.

This is just common sense really. You're never supposed to just floor it. Make sure you're safe, then move off. Shouldn't take more than a second or two.

The issue is people that take more than a few seconds to just drive.

These are some of the worst human beings on the planet.

But (in the US) this is what you get when you allow a system whereby if your licence never expires you never, ever have to take the driver's test as long as you live. So overtime shitty people develop shitty driving habits, and the rest of us that are conscious of other people besides ourselves have to pay for their dickery.

You're giving the drivers exam waaaaay too much relevance. Dumb people pass that shit each and every day. I've been saying that they need to make it significantly harder to pass. Unfortunately, you can't un teach bad habits.... So fat good that'll do.

I guess so, since I haven't taken it in 23 years so far. I had to take it twice to get my licence. But if it is that easy, than yes, make it better, make it more pertinent and then make people take it every four years. Or eight. At least something. It takes no time for people unchecked to develop shitty habits.

These people always blow my mind. Ill be driving the speed limit (or even slightly over, to keep up with traffic) and Lightning McGee will pass me on my right going insanely fast... only to end up at the same red that I do.

Its the same thing with people that change lanes constantly while I stay in the same lane, only to end up in the same place as me, or sometimes even behind me. Maybe if you left 5 minutes earlier, you wouldnt be driving like an idiot.

It doesn't always end up that way though. I can't count how many lights I didn't get stuck at because I passed people by who are going exactly the speed limit or slower. Sometimes we'll end up at the same light, sometimes they're getting stuck and I'm not.

If theyre going under the speed limit, I have no problem with passing them. As an example though, theres a long stretch of road near me with a 55 MPH speed limit. Its pretty common for people to drive 60 down this, sometimes even 65. Im keeping up with traffic, and this guy blasts by me going 75, maybe 80, switches in front of me... and then ends up at the red with me like 10 seconds later. Sure, you got there first, but whats the point?

Theyre the same people who blast off as soon as the light turns green instead of checking to make sure no one is running a red, like people are talking about in here.
