It's only about a minute and a half from where I have the video marked, but for those who won't watch it:

He basically says that by making your bed each morning, you have completed the first task of the day, and it will give you a sense of pride that will encourage you to complete more tasks that day. He goes on to say that it also teaches you that the little things matter, because if you can't do the little things right, you'll never be able to do the big things right.

All fair enough in my opinion, but I disagree with one of the last statements he makes. "If by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made." But getting into a bed that is made actually requires more effort than one that is not made. To get into a made bed, first you have to fold the sheets down before you get in. If my sheets are already thrown down from where I got out of bed that morning, I can skip that step and just hop straight into bed!

So I want to see if anyone here has an opinion on what advantages there are to making your bed, other than making it look good if you have company coming over or giving yourself a sense of pride. Does it make the bed warmer or something?

Not to bad mouth the guy, but this sounds like the kind of mindset you only come to after having all the independent thought hammered out of your head through constant and rigorous training. Good on him for finding purpose in bedsheets, but for a lot of people I imagine they're focused on bigger things.

No. I'm not a fan of that trivial bull shit. i get that in his line of work he was probably expected to make his bed perfectly every day as a test or whatever, but my bed being made in the morning has no relevance to how i approach my day and the things that really do matter...I do make my bed every morning but to act like that is "shaping" me in some way is foolish imho .

I don't think there's really anything wrong with what you said. I have respect for anyone who has served in the military. One of my friends' dad is a retired military vet, and he is a COMPLETE asshole, and even though I can't stand to be around the guy, I'm thankful and have a certain amount of respect for him for the time he served. But what you said about having all the independent thought hammered out of your head does seem to be a common trait among people who served a long time in the military.

It's probably a self-help book. I've seen lots of military folks write them because they struggle with finding a sense of purpose after serving and have found all sorts of ways to combat depression and other issues. The book probably reads like an instruction manual of little things you can do to keep from wallowing in feeling worthless.

no i completely get what he's trying to say...i just don't like it. What you can accomplish and where your mindset for the day is does not hinge on the little things. i can leave the house with a sink full of dishes, an unmade bed, and a kitchen floor that needs to be mopped...and still accomplish an incredible amount that day before coming home and dealing with "the little things". the little things get beaten into him during training. people say it builds character and i agree to an extent but not on this level. i just don't agree with the message. to him, he got to where he is and has the mentality he has because of those little things being beaten into him so to speak...i don't think that's the best way to approach your day...

I know I know. The book isn't actually about making your bed. I just found it comical after some of the discussion that took place in this topic. I watched another video where the guy was being interviewed, and he actually seems to be a pretty intelligent guy.

I get it. You make your own meaning. And if you make your bed (which doesn't even have to be a literally made bed, just some amount of positive tangible effort made) to start the day, no matter how shitty your day goes, you can look back and say hey, at least I made the bed. At least I did the thing.

At best, it's a mental foundation to build on. I did this little thing already. What other things can I do today, bigger than this?

Yes. Infantrymen who put their life on the line for their country have always been worthy of respect in my book. But the men higher up on the ladder who made decisions that contributed to the holocaust are scum. I could maybe understand complying with the Nazi plans if your life or family was being threatened. But fuck anyone who volunteered for that shit.

I agree with that officer, for the most part. Im sure there are many successful people who do not make their beds in the morning or at all, and he did acknowledge that its just a simple task. But that wasnt the real message anyway. Hes advising us to do something both positive and productive the moment you wake up. Given enough time, this becomes a habit that will help build overall discipline. It sounds easy enough to do, so Im going to try it out.
