For non-essential federal employees, isn't it just a nice vacation? They're literally not allowed to work because the government is legally not allowed to pay them, but once a bill passes, they get back-pay?

Unpaid vacation, and they don't get back pay unless it's authorized in the bill that eventually gets passed.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump said "Back pay? Why? They chose to work for no pay, so let them not get paid."

Then we have another controversy because now because the president said it, people copy him, and we're fighting over whether people should be paid for their work or not.

ugh.

What an ignorant statement. How are they working with no pay if they can't work because the government is shut down?

I'm pretty sure that any federal employee that still has to work during a shutdown will receive back pay after everything is back to normal. It's only the ones that are furloughed that may not be paid after a budget is passed unless explicitly authorized.

I thought nonessential personnels don't work and don't get paid, and essential personnels work but don't get paid during a government shutdown.

But once the budget passes, they all get paid backpay.

They got back pay the last time it happened in 2013, so they very well could this time as well.

This always happens at the end of the fiscal year. We dont get paid for like a month and then get it backpayed.

1 - We're paid through February 1, which means we'll get at least the next paycheck from the government if the shutdown lasts that long.
2 - I can't speak for all banks, but historically both USAA and Navy Fed have paid us regardless.

should get backpay, but technically there's a chance I won't

There wasn't a Republican majority in 2013. If you honestly believe the GOP will authorize back pay for mere plebeians, you're delusional.

Given how strongly they've been attacking national parks this past year it would not surprise me if they threw out some complete nonsense about how they have to further reduce certain national parks to justify the costs of backpay...

they get paid but they don't get the checks.

they have to wait until the government gets un-shut down to actually get the money they've earned.

This is not the case with other federal employees. Just the military. Other employees just won't get anything.

Unless the government approves backpay for employees which they've done in this past.

Also apparently the way NFCU/USAA is handling this now is the military can get an interest/charge-free loan for up to $6,000 if the situation isn't resolved by February 1st.

yeah, I got the email about having a zero-interest loan specifically for gov't shutdowns
don't need it since my wife is an engineer, but it's nice to know there are options for others who are stuck

since i'm designated as furlough and not lwop, I should get backpay even without working, but eh who knows with this congress?
