They sided with Jake because they all hated Alonzo but i think the mob had dibs on him all day. Its not mentioned but thats how i always saw it. but yeah the ending is the weakest part of the movie --- The night brims with defiled scum,and is permeated by their rotten stench. Just think. they likely sided with Ethan Hawk because they knew Alonzo was a piece of shit, but didn't kill him because they didn't want the trouble killing a cop could bring

Alonzo was bigfooting them for a long time, their compliance with him wasn't by choice and they hated him. They saw a chance to get him out of their lives and took it because they all knew what was waiting for him
