When they got to the apartment of 91-year-old Ethel Davis, Davis' daughter says she begged Sergeant Timothy Brovakos to leave her mother because it was a fireproof apartment

When Sergeant Brovakos entered the apartment, it was filling up with smoke. The sergeant picked up Davis and carried her out.

While the sergeant was carrying her, he collapsed just short of the stairwell.

Quinn said that the other officers tried to carry Sergeant Brovakos out, but he went back for Davis.

The other officers said dont do it. And he goes anyway, Quinn told the New York Post. Then he gets her and picks her up with another officer and carries her down to the ninth floor.

Davis later died of smoke inhalation

The fire is rarely what kills you, it's almost always suffocation from smoke inhalation.

It won't burn but it will still fill with smoke so I mean that's kind of fire proof but unless you're in a sealed concrete cube it's not fire proof.

Sure, but labelling something "fireproof". When it doesn't do anything to protect you, from the most dangerous part of the fire is nuts.

Rescuers have protocol designed to prevent rescuers from becoming a victim and putting more rescuers in danger. They are probably just investigating to make sure he didn't break protocol.

When a building is on fire, you let the fire department do the going in and saving. When anyone else rushes in, it puts extra strain on the FD due to 1+ people they need to account for and puts their lives in more danger.

It sounds counter intuitive and the seconds that the FD are taking to get there and do the saving are excruciating but that's how life saving gets done in that situation.

I saw my mother, on the floor, right next to a hallway exit door where smoke was coming up the stairwell, Marcia said. Everybody else was gone.

Marcia said there have been several fires in the building over the 26 years that her mother who had five children, 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren lived there, and they never left the apartment.

An FDNY source said Davis might have been better off left alone, explaining, Thats a fireproof building. Youre supposed to take shelter in place unless otherwise directed.

Joanne Smith, a former president of the buildings co-op board, was also dumbfounded.

Nobody understood why police were evacuating the entire building, said Smith. Our apartments are self-contained. So as long as the door is closed, the fire should remain within the confines of the apartment.

So, dress him down. Privately. Like professionals.

I would imagine that's usually the case in a town hall style internal meeting with all police officers at the worst. In this case, an unfortunately event resulted which has to be formally be looked into to which the media will not ignore. Have to say something to the press which was "under investigation". Media can make it sound all like "oooooh drama!" but is the most vague thing they could have given them. Media then did what media does and here we are.
