I already explained how the definition you gave me includes playing video games and I'm not going to explain it again. You cannot deny a fact as basic as this.

It's a physical activity going by your logic though right? I'm pretty pro at it. So I guess that makes me an athlete. An athlete doesn't have to be competitive.

I can't find any non-competitive athletes, so no.

It doesn't because your definition of energy doesn't fit. That page is not recommending you play 60-90 minutes of video games a day.

So if I made it into a competition I'm an athlete? The actual thing is irrelevant as long as it requires me to move even slightly?

Physical activity is any form of exercise or movement of the body that uses energy.

energy is "used" when a force is exerted to move a mass a distance

They're referring to energy used from the body. Not pressing a button.

That is energy used from the body. If you used no energy to press a button, you would have a source of infinite energy which is physically impossible.

They're not professional athletes. Get all the fucking way outta here if you think they are.

Look at the physical work actual athletes put in to just maintaining their fitness level in order to compete, and then look at these dickbags sitting in front of a monitor for hours on end.

No. Just no.

Sitting or lying down not even moving a muscle releases energy from the body. A comatose or brain-dead patient also releases energy from the body. Are they physically active?

Any sort of movement is, by your very own definition, physical activity. And no, for the umpteenth time, that doesn't make you an athlete. Sustained competition using said physical activity make you an athlete.

Of course. Chess players are considered professional athletes as well.

If physical exertion is the concern, t's still important for players to maintain a certain level of physical fitness as well. That is healthy for the mind which is what they use when they play the game.

I don't see much reason not to call them athletes beyond arbitrary hangups.

No, it doesn't.

A professional athlete is a person who competes in an athletic event, wherein the physical ability of that person and the physical abilities of his team are the chief deciding factors in who wins and who loses.

Just because you "use energy" to move thumb sticks doesn't make it an athletic event. Nor does your physicality at all play into deciding the victor.

They're not athletes.

Tbh official definition isn't really that valuable. It's just semantics.

They spend literally their whole lives training for a certain competition with audience, and people who are more proficient at that competition win. There are broadcasts and stories practically identical to athletes anyways so... But from what I hear, e-sports athletes are significantly less of a diva than athletes of other sports lol

Your physical ability is the only thing that determines whether you lose or not in competitive gaming. Here's footage of a top Melee player's hands while playing a character that isn't too technically intensive:

There are plenty of people who are physically incapable of this.

Because your argument makes no sense.

You're saying that anything that requires energy is a physical activity because of how you interpreted that article. Which is literally everything on this planet going by your interpretation.

So any competitors for anything are athletes. Which I don't think anyone would agree with.

No. The biggest difference i see is that even amateurs or people that play sports recreationally can be considered an athlete. When I wrestled in high school, I considered myself an athlete. When I went home and played Call of Duty with my friends after practice, I didn't consider myself an athlete in that particular instance. So that's the distinction I make. If you are going to say pro gamers are athletes, then you need to say that the people who only play recreationally are also athletes. And it's hard for me to call the 300 pound behemoth who drinks mountain dew, eats hot cheetos, and sits his ass down in front of a $1500 gaming PC all day an "athlete".

Why? You wouldn't say Trump is being athletic when he shirks his work and goes to play golf. There is a threshold to what you can say is being "athletic" which as an athlete in the modern sense, it's more about the competition than the athleticism despite the definition. A Bronze V is not playing League as an athlete or in an athletic sense in any way

A Bronze V is not playing League as an athlete or in an athletic sense in any way

Again, this is my point. I can say that 5 year olds who play T-Ball are playing a sport and being athletic, just like professionals in the MLB. what is it about video games that if you are playing recreationally it is not a sport, but when you play professionally it suddenly becomes a sport?
