I just played the RE 7 demo after being completely shocked at all the praise the game has gotten, especially after the disappointment that was RE 6 and the ambivalent reaction to RE 5 (bordering on dislike)

It's... it's in first person. That alone made me question the high reviews because I'm not in that "first person makes it more immersive" camp, I just find it annoying from a gameplay perspective (ie fun) to have such a limited point of view.

Also it reminds me of... well those recent horror movies you see at the box office like Saw and that other garbage. Maybe the actual game isn't like that but that's the impression I got.

I dunno it just didn't strike me as fun if that's the kinda game it's going to be, but I'm interested in hearing opinions about the game? You can spoil the game no biggie.

It's fun and has some good scares. Much better than games like Outlast in terms of actual gameplay. After the first area the puzzles start coming in a little more. It really depends on what you like about FPS horror games and what you don't like though

The gameplay is relevant. The house is in the beginning but it's not running around trying to find obscure objects.

From what I heard, the demo was a bad representation of the game outside of general setting and gameplay controls.

I really liked RE7, but don't go into it if your history with Resident Evil is like everything from after Resident Evil 4. It's not an action game.

But is it really about surviving some redneckish family?

The family in question is infected, with one trying to help you and the others looking to kill you throughout the course of the game, along with a variety of monsters which come from the infection. The story unravels as you go, and there's DLC that expands on what came before and after the main game.

The demo was just ripping off PT. There's about as much difference between the demo and RE7 as there is between RE7 and Mario Kart.

But RE was always envisioned as first-person and it fucking works. The first few hours are fucking scary.
