I'm playing Silver on the Virtual Console (ended up getting it so I could get Celebi) and I had forgotten just how barren the early levels were for Pokemon moves back in the old days. Still using Water Gun and Thundershock as coverage moves and my Pokemon are almost level 30. Picked up Heracross because and then looked up his move pool to see how long before he finally gets moves of his typing and... he learns Counter and Reversal for fighting, that's it. Bug is even worse with it only getting Megahorn all the way at level 54 when you've beat most of the game.

Later Gens really spoiled me, these movepools are terrible lol. And the Pokemon variety is pretty weak too, what a shame. Ah well, I just need to get Lugia and Ho-Oh and then I can forget about the non-remake versions of these older gens.

The movepools basically didn't start getting decent until 4th gen. 3rd gen is a bit better than the first two but still has a lot of duds. It's amazing how the developers have never really gotten the idea that a Pokemon isn't all that good to use if it doesn't have any moves that let it do passable damage, even nowadays there are still Pokemon that don't get a single decent move of the right type for their best attack stat until super high levels unless you breed or something

Gen 1 and 2 were foundations, no way the series was still new, it was gen 3 and 4 where they started making real improvements to the movepool.

No game can do it all the first few games, pokemon still brought good stuff to the table though.

if you KO the opponent with Hyper Beam, you don't need to recharge.
