I started watching Yuki Yuna is a Hero (and I can confirm that Yuki Yuna is indeed a hero). I'm only halfway through the first season right now but I'm enjoying it a lot. This has almost everything that I felt Madoka was missing so if it stays good I guess I'll be the weirdo who ranks the copycat over the original inspiration. I love the fun team dynamic and how they're using their unique powers to support each other.

I'd heard this was another dark magical girl anime but I didn't understand why until they were all hit by physical defects after using their max powers once. Then I was like... oh... there's still six episodes left... oh damn this is going to get bad isn't it? The beach episode is next so hopefully they at least get to have fun there.

Also, the music in this is really good. I'm usually bad at catching background songs but I'm noticing these fairly often and they've all been impressive.

It might seem like a little thing, but I appreciate how Citrus is prioritizing getting through content at a good pace rather than scripting it out for climaxes at the end of each episode. A few times now it's stopped at an odd point while having a big moment somewhere in the middle, and it's easy to imagine them fucking with the pacing to put those moments at the end instead. Obviously this varies depending on the show, but there are certainly some adaptations out there that could benefit from this approach.

It was great when the shogi was just used as a symbol for Rei's emotional instability. When they bring it to the forefront of the plot, it just feels weird.

I'm sad to say after 3 episodes of FranXX I don't think it's going to improve at all. There's just something missing. I don't feel that magical spark for the show. Usually I'm really into either the mecha or one of the characters but so far none of the main characters really draw me in.

I'd like to disagree since there's ultra-dark stuff in other media that I really enjoy, but I can't exactly point to any anime that proves it (Made in Abyss is the darkest anime in my top ten and right now I'd easily rank Yuki Yuna head of it, we'll see if that's still true once I finish it). I think it's probably more accurate to say that dark stuff has a steeper hill to climb than light stuff. I can get a base level of enjoyment from cute anime girls doing cute things even if it isn't being done particularly well (like Slow Start this season). Meanwhile, dark and serious stuff has a lot of pitfalls that can instantly degrade it in my eyes. There are the obvious poor world-building or nonsensical character actions (which simply matter less in a less serious story) but there's also pitfalls like when the story becomes so grim that it becomes a pit of endless despair. Madoka spoilers that was the trap I felt Madoka fell into. Other than few points in the movie, once Mami died I can't remember another legitimately happy moment. There probably were some, I'm not arguing that, but the lingering impression I have now a month later is everyone trying to kill each other while Madoka looks on with a sad look.

Apologies for the long post, but I finished Yuki Yuna is a Hero (including the prequel and the sequel mini-seasons). Before I get into spoiler territory I just want to say that this was a great anime. I had a few problems with the story (though most were addressed by the end) and a few of the more spiritual aspects left me going wtf until I searched the internet for answers, but I loved this overall. All of the characters were a lot of fun and I loved the story's tone. It never shied away from the more depressing aspects of the setting but at the same time the characters never allowed themselves to be buried by them. Yuki Yuna herself was an especially amazing character (and a legit hero). I'm seriously considering buying a $130 dollar figure of her that I saw in the Crunchyroll store but I know I probably shouldn't be blowing money like that. Anyway:

Season One spoilers I enjoyed the season for the most part, but it had a few major problems towards the end. I hated it when Togo went loco and blew a hole in the wall. 'If everyone dies then no one will suffer!' is one of my most hated villain motivations because it has never made a lick of sense to me. I've always been of the opinion that the heroes should just tough it out for the sake of the greater good in scenarios like this, and trying to save your friends by killing everyone (including your friends) is just... stupid. The ending where they all got their bodies back for seemingly no reason bugged me too.

Not much to say about the prequel mini-season, it was fairly standard. Gin was badass though, god damn.

Sequel mini-season spoilers. This was where the anime became top tier for me. Say what you will about the first season being heavily inspired by Madoka, this second season went its own way and it was awesome. I really felt for Yuna when she was cursed and couldn't tell anyone about it. I appreciated how all of the characters reacted to it, too, everyone was great this season. I had trouble following along with the spiritual logistics of the ending but I've since found explanations elsewhere that gave me something I can accept and now I really like it. This season also addressed all of my lingering problems from the first season. Togo acknowledged that she was a moron when she tried to kill everyone and honestly strove to make amends for her momentary lapse into stupidity, which I appreciated. It also went a lot deeper into exactly why their bodies healed, and even turned it into a neat plot point!

So, yeah. Yuki Yuna is a Hero, and this is currently my sixth favorite anime.

Prequel season was actually one of my preferred parts for a couple reasons. I thought the slice of lifey comedy stuff was way better and more natural here than the other two parts. The second half of S1 was particularly bad in this regard, IIRC. Episode 7 and 8 or so were totally trite. It also had by far the best ending of the three parts, with no dumb copouts. The final season kinda didn't have those either, but it was basically a completely happy ending framed as a bittersweet victory for some reason? The bad guy's dead, the sketchy good guy is dead, all the main characters are alive. I liked episodes 2-4 a good amount, but the stuff with Yuna getting married to Shinju and whatever was all dumb.. And I've mentioned this before, but I hated S1's ending. It was really building up to greatness and you could've had a bittersweet ending where the girls learn to be happy despite their disabilities. But of course, this is Japan, where the handicapped are treated as second-class citizens, so obviously they couldn't ever be truly happy, and they had to be fixed. bleh

Yuki Yuna spoilers About the ending, I think it was treated as bittersweet because humanity was on its own now rather than being protected, but there were no real enemies anymore so in my opinion they're probably better off. There were also a few shots of parts of the world being in ruins, hinting that survival would be difficult, but they didn't linger on this aspect either so I agree it didn't have the impact it could have.

I didn't mind their treatment of disabilities either. They all got the magical happy ending, but I liked how it was explained in the sequel season so it didn't bother me too much (that they got new bodies/body parts, their old ones weren't cured). I also felt they portrayed the disabilities pretty well up to that point. Togo was never treated as less for being in a wheelchair, Fu made the most of having an eyepatch, Itsuki refused to let losing her voice ruin her, and so on. I think the curing part was more that they deserved it for all their hard work rather than a knock against the disabled.

I mean, your idea about them learning to live with it would've been impactful too if it was done well, I just didn't mind the direction they took instead.

I was just using the order in the title. Some animes seem to switch it to the western order while others keep the Japanese order, and out of laziness I tend to use whatever order the source used.
