Who should be shamed more?

Why isn't it socially acceptable to shame fatties when 99.999999% of the time it's due to it being their own fault and something they continue to choose to be

It's not acceptable to shame either one.

Fat people are generally more deserving of it. But just because someone deserves to be treated a certain way does not make it right to actually do so.

Smoking by far. It is always a choice someone makes to smoke, unlike obesity, which can have underlying causes unrelated to diet.

Now if the poll were reworded to be between smoking and poor nutrition, then it would make sense to be dead even. Otherwise half the people voting look ignorant.

Obese people do end up costing less in health care than smokers, but since they BOTH die so much younger than healthy people they end up consuming less health care over their lifespan, so if you want to shame people on THAT basis, you have to shame the healthy people.

This.

I don't think it's okay to be remorsely fat and both are drains in healthcare financing, BUT on top of that smokers are an active, serious source of pollution that can also risk the health of others just be like by being in the vicinity of others.

Guarantee the majority of people voting fat on the poll are smokers themselves and just being defensive.

At least smoking is connected to an actual addiction versus not knowing how the put the fork down and being too lazy to stick to a damn diet.

Fatties all the way.

It's calorie counting. Do basic math and stick to it, and you will lose weight.

What a hysterically moronic post. I'm guessing you smoke so you think "What I do is a legitimate problem, but THOSE people have no excuse!"

Nope, but way to project.

Simple fact of the matter is that calorie counting works 100% of the time unless a person in question has an extraordinarily rare metabolic disorder which is a statistically insignificant portion of the population compared to the obesity rates in the United States. If you stick to a meaningful diet long enough, you absolutely will lose weight.

Pointing out that at least smokers have an actual addiction excuse as a flimsy defense doesn't change that.

Shaming either is not going to help. If you would actually care about societies best, you would shame the junk food industry and tobacco industries and protest against both a lot. Laughing at either is just you feeding your own narcissism by making you feel better about yourself by ridiculing people who you think are below you. Neither smokers, or fat people won't change, no matter how much you try shaming them.

I have smoked for 15 years and tried to quit probably 10 times it is not easy. I also lost 100 pounds and found putting a burger down is a lot easier than a cigarette. People who have never smoked dont realize you feel ill and miserable when you stop easy to judge others when you were never addicted.

fatties are more lazy and have less control then smokers.

Smokers actively harm the environment and potentially others with 2nd hand smoke.

Honestly it's a tough one, but fat people can't actually harm you by just being fat. Smokers can through secondhand.

Both deserve to be shamed, but smokers get the nod if only because it is actively harmful to everyone around them.

Yup, quitting is really hard. Try to cut down to one or two at the end of the day. Looking forward to your nightime smoke will help you through the cravings, and when those go away in a month or so stopping completely will be be easy. It also helps if you can have a non-smoker hold on to your cigs while attempting this.

Are you really this dumb that you don't grasp how weight gain tends to be psychological

Of course it's part psychological. Everything is. But that doesn't change any of the points that I made. Calorie counting + actually sticking to a diet for a long enough time = guaranteed weight loss.

That's very different from a chemical dependency caused by an actual addiction.

fatties harm the environment as well. by definition unnecessary consumption to get that fat and heavier things take more to move.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2009/apr/20/obesity-climate-change

The greenhouse gas emissions from food production and car travel for the fatter billion people were estimated at between 0.4bn and 1bn extra tonnes a year.

from multiple anti-tobacco sources (couldn't find any articles)

US tobacco industry produces 16 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in one year global tobacco production quadruples that amount.

just losing this many carbon-dioxide-absorbing trees (600M) leaves at least 22 million net tons of CO2 in the atmosphere

and I can't find any info on CO2 released by cigarettes themselves but im guessing it is close to neutral given that the tobacco plant would have had to absorb CO2 to begin with.

It takes less than 2 weeks to quit smoking if you actually cold turkey instead of cutting down or extending it with patches. 5~10 pounds a week does not solve obesity in a month.

None of which speaks to how easy each is to do, nor did anyone say anything about solving obesity in a month.

Quitting smoking is about breaking a chemical addiction and a habit. Losing weight is about restructuring existing eating habits and has no chemical addiction. Retraining habits is easier than breaking them outright, to say nothing of chemical addiction. On both fronts (habit and chemical dependency) quitting smoking is objectively the more difficult task. If your experiences differ that makes you an outlier, not a representative example.
