Republicans want states to have the ability to discriminate to escape the tyranny of federal government. Democrats want federal government to have the ability to discriminate to escape the tyranny of the will of the people. Both ultimately want control over what people can and cannot do, they just go about it in different ways.

The original Pilgrims wanted STRICTER religious government. They were puritanical.

They hated how sacrilegious and diverse England was getting.

The ones who wanted Freedom and Equality came later.
