Wow this is the worst change I could possibly imagine.

When I read the OP I thought it was a joke akin to GameFAQs gold memes.

Truly baffling

Saying shit tastes like chocolate doesn't make it true.

Yeah, but the site having more money to run competitions and pay rewards for FAQ writers is a good thing.

People don't write FAQs for money. They do it because they have a passion for gaming and writing.

@SBAllen: What advantage is there in using this subdomain over moving everything to one property?

I think some of that is covered in his announcement post.

Nah, not really.

It explains why the change is happening, but not why they're using a subdomain rather than just putting everything on a single property.

What I dont get is how theyre redirecting gamefaqs.com "forever"

Like, I work in IT so I know they will have redirection in place via DNS but they will have to keep ownership of the gamefaqs domain in order to redirect

That means they will continue to pay for a domain they dont use, forever. Thats fine I guess, I just dont believe it.

I bet within a year or two they will announce the gamefaqs.com domain is going away and for us to "update" our favorites and bookmarks based on a change they made a year ago etc.

Just letting people know to update your bookmarks now etc. Not that its that hard but jus saiyan :)

Welp, RIP gamefaqs i luvd u

In other words, will we have to change our bookmarks? Really all that matters to me.

No, it said so in the announcement.

Huh - I figured there would be expected increase in traffic with this sort of move because of the SEO impact.

There's no SEO benefit to doing this because they're using a subdomain.

Here's my take:

I don't see anything wrong with the change. Everything will look the same, except what is in the URL bar in your browser. Maybe this change will help with something on the back end or something that will be giving CBSi more money?

The thing that stands out to me is the more rewards for FAQS and site competitions. So in my eyes, this upcoming change must be getting more income for CBSi/Gamefaqs. Unless I'm missing something?

Anyways, I think this is positive. I don't think they would do this for nothing.

there is no SEO downside either.

rankings won't change as well as Google mainatins their own transactional DNS history so when one domain changes to another they know and update the rankings.

I don't know why you're so concerned about SEO

It's a neutral, yeah.

My point is that if they're combining the two, why wouldn't they just move to a single domain instead?

I think the goal there is to use the sub domain in order to still keep the boards and sites somewhat separate. One or more parties didn't want to combine the sites into a single domain. No Gamespot logos on the GameFAQs logo, no Gamespot user access to GameFAQs boards, etc.

why would you have that clusterfuck of a URL which, by the way, uses the exact same DNS as gamespot.com thus ruining the search rankings.
