Him being a fan of Space Quest or whatever they called their Star Trek wasn't the cause of the fucked-up shit that he did, it just provided the framing device. I'd say it was a concept based on those people who use games to vent out their frustrations. Like those people who would design FPS maps based on their school/work or name/design enemies after people they know.

Sometimes an escapist fantasy (like being in your favourite sci-fi show) can be twisted into something a lot worse when you bring real life and personal elements into it. Then you've got the concept of AI personalities layered into it.
